Working on a really exciting play right now- Stupid F**king Bird at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in DC. It's a very loose adaptation of The Seagull. We started previews today and the show runs through June 23rd.

From the website:
"An aspiring young director rampages against the art created by his mother’s generation. A nubile young actress wrestles with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist.  And everyone discovers just how disappointing love, art, and growing up can be. In this irreverent, contemporary, and very funny remix of Chekhov’s The Seagull, award-winning playwright Aaron Posner wages a timeless battle between young and old, past and present, in search of the true meaning of it all."

Lots of affordable tickets! Cheap date night is June 9th- $20 tickets and $2 PBRs. Under 30 tickets are $20, and stampede seats are $15. There's also an "artists mixer" on Thursday for $20- mixer starts at 6p, performance at 8p.

If you're in the DC area, I hope you come see it. It's funny, thoughtful, and full of amazing actors.

I agree with what was said above, and would also suggest reading the script beforehand if possible. That way, when the PSM is explaining different facets of the production, you'll better understand what they are talking about and how they fit together.

I just asm my first show. Usually I act but since it was a spring musical I asmed. To be honest at first I felt I had nothing to do. Then I did and it was stressful but it got better and I loved it. Afther this year my sm leaves for nau and I hope to get sm for next years three shows. Any advice.

Logan, you may want to make your question more specific. What kind of advice are you looking for, exactly? If you're looking for just general advice about stage managing in high school, I would suggest trying the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Employment / Re: What are you looking for in the next job>

A lot of mine are also on your list, Matthew. My primary wants are a job that is challenging/that I can grow in, and feeling respected and valued within the organization/team. Also, I want to work where I feel supported during the process. When I first started SMing, I thought this was a matter of working at organizations with a lot of resources (money, personnel, etc). But I've worked at larger organizations that don't do this well, and smaller organizations that really make the effort to really support me and the rehearsal process. Given the choice, large or small, I'll pick the organization that supports me.

Theatre Management by David Conte and Stephen Langley. It's more about producing theatre as a whole and less about backstage work specifically, but it has a lot of info about how theatre organizations are structured and managed.
