Introductions / Re: Howdy, Hi, Hello!
« on: Jan 30, 2013, 11:48 pm »
Hello and welcome to the boards!!!

617
I started recently, if a show required it - sending out notes, but only during performances.

It included run time for that performance (or performances)
General Notes for all the cast (Usually just cut and paste from the performance report)
And any specific notes for the cast that affected the entire cast, and then sent out specific actor notes directly.

It was a show that was under-rehearsed and we had a lot of settling.

The Green Room / FACEWASH - clean up your facebook profile.

I found this app interesting - most of the offensive stuff came from comments people had posted about me . . . but a way to look over your facebook and possibly remove some offensive stuff.

*** NOT AFFILIATED WITH THIS COMPANY, BUT RAN ACROSS THIS POSTING ***

http://backstagejobs.com/jobs.php

Milwaukee Repertory Theater is currently seeking applicants for the position of Equity Production Stage Manager.

This position supervises the Stage Management Department, which is made up of 7 AEA stage managers, 1 apprentice and 2 interns. In addition, the Production Stage Manager will work on at least 3 shows throughout the 12-show season.

The Production Stage Manger works directly with the Production Manger and other Production Area Heads to facilitate productions throughout the season. This position is integral in assisting communication between the entire company; in particular, the Production Stage Manager is the link between the rehearsal room/performance spaces and the Artistic Staff.

The Production Stage Manger strives to create an environment of collaboration within the department. The focus of the work is not on the individual, but on the art itself.

The Green Room / Re: Thank You Cards for Interviews
« on: Jan 21, 2013, 09:30 pm »
But I think for an interview, the "norm" would be responding via the way most communication happened - and that was probably e-mail.

I think if I had an entirely e-mail conversation, and then an interview, followed by a written thank you card, it would smack of overkill or trying too hard.

But it depends on your overall marketing plan.

The Green Room / Re: SMASH - the TV series

I believe the actress who plays the SM is in CINDERELLA on Broadway.

Maybe they will switch SM's????

Who will make the smoothies?

I have, um, a c**k-ring . . . it was a opening night gift . . . for the first two act version of I AM MY OWN WIFE (written and directed by Doug Wright, with Jefferson Mayes).  My lighting designer gave it to me.  I had no idea of what to do with it.

I MEAN, I know what to do with it . . .

Tools of the Trade / Re: Backstage Emergency Kit
« on: Jan 15, 2013, 11:38 am »
Yes, in the usa, how I have been instructed is to let people know where the first aid kit is . . . and even if we fetch a pain killer for an actor, we grab every pain reliever, and leave them on the table.

A lot will depend on the type of the show . . . the show may have SPECIFIC needs for SPECIFIC emergencies . . .

The Green Room / Re: Live Animals Onstage.

Yes, let's be clear - for the dog's safety, the cast's safety and your sanity - there should be a dog wrangler.

And ideally, a dog trainer.

It really, really depends on the dog and the training.

But most dogs are food driven, and you can do with treat placement, actors with treats in their hands, etc, etc.

Animals are unpredictable.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Groundplan Doesn't Fit
« on: Jan 11, 2013, 11:28 am »
I second discussing with the director.

They may know which area that aren't going to use in detail, and won't mind fudging.

I think over all shrinking 25% will actually be more problematic . . . in that, when spacing (although for a play like AUGUST, it might not be a huge deal), but everyone would go "hey, we have more space", and then actually stage thinking they have more space then they actually do.

I tend to truncate in the extremes, far SL, far SR, Upstage or downstage - but all depends on the set.

And do factor in the over-time you will be working, but not paid for ....

Does anyone out there use this on their resume and what are you hoping to represent?

I have dropped any sort of notion of "special skills" off my resume, but I do put in my cover letter I have called shows with up to 14 points of automation . . . again, it may be a more cover letter worthy info.
