Employment / Re: La Jolla Playhouse is seeking SM/ASM resumes
« on: Feb 06, 2013, 12:14 pm »
You never know . . . to be honest . . . but in general, if a well established theater company that produces regularly posts looking for SMs for an entire season - that's a red flag that they are fulfilling a requirement.   For example, La Jolla Playhouse knows where to find stage managers, often using Broadway Stage Managers for their larger shows, and isn't short knowing where to find stage managers.

Usually, I would say . . . anytime there is a posting that is posting the entire season is farming for resumes, and fulfilling their requirement.

No, having worked for large regional theater and have been on the receiving end of these resumes - it doesn't mean your resume will go unnoticed.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Stage Manager Pay

But, let's be honest - the best paying jobs are not AEA jobs . . . I think it's a fair question to ask about pay.

The more interesting part is it worth doing for a living . . .

This is my advice . . .

if you can do anything else and be happy, do that.

I don't think it's something you go in for the money.

Pay varies from nothing to $150,000 (and sometimes up) a year - but it really depends on what level you are working, the type of shows you work on, and your experience.

I agree - now is the ONLY time I would recommend that you list other technical theater skills.

Often, early in a career, a SM intern, PA or even an ASM is going to have some sort of expectation to do other things - run crew tracks, props, etc.

So, by highlighting the other technical theater skills, you can sell your other skills.

Just received a response - this also seems to be like just fulfilling the AEA requirement . . .

(But also think of those annoying things in life we get out of as well!)

My first marriage broke up, partially, due to the hours one puts into this job.
I missed my son's high school graduation, several birthdays.
Weddings, funerals, retirement celebrations.
I miss being with my husband, for months at a time, to go on the road (and often, leaving the puppies behind)
I give up security, long term planning.
Vacations.
Holidays with family.

I know you don't have to give up all of these things, but at some point you have to make tough decisions when you are money driven and trying to keep your career moving forward.
