Welcome!  Where are you studying?

I wish I had been required to register for SMNetwork for my stage management class.  Tons and tons of great resources!

December Madness I: 2012 / Re: December Madness!

Maybe it's the stage manager skills ingrained inside my soul, but these new match-ups are stressful.  Choosing between them makes me feel like I'm turning my back on an old friend!

As great and useful as everything in the tournament is, I think it will be paper and pencil fighting it out to the bitter end!

Sadly, my husband always asks for the NFL toaster when he sees it in a store... And I'm buying the Chip-Grabber for my dad.  Genius.

Yikes!  This one is close...  Not reading comments before voting, I quickly realized after voting that I just broke the tie.  I'm all in favor of the flame test.

Should we put them both through a flame test or something silly like that?

Employment / Re: What (not?) to wear
« on: Dec 01, 2012, 09:20 pm »
I have a pair of gray slacks that I love- they have become my "interview pants," with various tops and cardigans and such.

I have to agree bex, gray slacks are the way to go!  They go with anything.

As for running, it depends on my calling location.  I have a fear of skirts/dresses... when you've had to unexpectedly go out on the suspension grid on opening night in your dressy clothes, you would be fearful of skirts/dresses too.   I've been known to leave my black sneakers in the booth as well.  You never know!

Craft Services will be responsible for all beverages and snacks in the green room during rehearsals.  Someone will hand deliver said beverages and snacks to the stage managers during all breaks.

No actor will eat/drink anything but water/smoke in costume for fear of being seen on the camera system.

Employment / Re: Phone interview for opera company
« on: Nov 28, 2012, 11:12 pm »
Having been the interviewer for a couple phone interviews (for stage managers at a theme park), it really is important that you are confident about your skills and smile.  Your personality and professionalism really show through more than you may think over the phone.

Chances are good there will be some lulls or empty air time while the interviewer makes notes; don't feel like you have to fill the space.  Babbling usually makes your answer unclear.

Like everyone else has noted, do your research on them.  You are interviewing them as much as they are you.  Write down questions you have for them before hand, and write their names down as they give them to you during your interview.  Names go a long way.

My biggest issue was when interviewees didn't answer the entire question.  Many questions are set up as two or even three part questions!  It's ok to ask them to repeat the question if you need to.

Break a leg!

Super excited to see how this shakes out...

The Green Room / Re: What about my dog?

Thanks for the suggestions, Matthew!  Lizz...that sounds like it would not be much fun on tour...yikes, I hadn't considered flying.

While boarding would probably be our last option, I'm leery of leaving our little guy with our parents but know that in a pinch, they would be willing to help out.

I worked for a show in Vegas and everyone always talked about how we needed a doggie-daycare in the back alley!

The Green Room / What about my dog?
« on: Nov 12, 2012, 11:45 am »
I've been thinking about this for awhile now... My husband is an actor, I'm a stage manager, and we have an awesome dog.  If we get summer work (which is the goal), who will take care of our dog?  Can he go with us?

So, do any of you out there have experience taking your dog with you on tour or to summer stock?  Did you have to provide your own housing or did your company manager accommodate for your furry friend?  Is it really feasible to care for a pet while doing summer stock?

Thoughts/suggestions/stories of your travels are welcome!

Thanks,
Ashlee
