Tools of the Trade / Re: The Curse of Drop Box
« on: Feb 20, 2013, 11:57 pm »
Limiting access (among other reasons) is why I started creating a show specific Dropbox folder that was SM only.  The only people with access to the folder are my assistants and me.  While we also belong to the larger show Dropbox folder that the entire creative and production staff are members of, my team and I have a folder that is just us (and I maintain admin control/select the option that I am the only person who can invite others to join).  It gives us an opportunity to share documents amongst us for easy access and editing and then we upload final drafts to the show Dropbox for the entire show staff to access (usually in pdf format).  But there are certainly files that I only keep on my personal computer.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork John!  It sounds like you are very enthusiastic and passionate about your work; two great traits in a young stage manager.  Hope you find the forum to be a useful resource.

Brilliant!  It's been too long since we last had a DC area SM drink night.  Heading over to Regional to start the thread now...

I'm currently stage managing Spring Awakening at Olney Theatre Center.  This has been a very rewarding process for me and has challenged me in a really good way.  We run through March 10, so if you'll be in the DC area (we're about a 30ish minute drive north of DC) this show is not to be missed.  I'm also open to shadowing; PM me for details.  The lighting, by Robert Wierzel, is INSANE.  A slideshow of production photos can be found on BroadwayWorld and you can also check out our review in the Washington Post

The Green Room / Re: SNOWMAGEDDONPOCALYPSE
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 10:38 am »
I was working on a production of Bus Stop when the snowstorms hit DC in 2010.  The theatre asked the acting company and me to live in the theatre's housing (onsite) so as not to lose any rehearsal time.  We were snowed in for seven days.  We made it out once between the storms for some supplies, but otherwise we could only walk from the back door of the housing to the side door of the theatre (about 10 feet).  Talk about sense memory.

Hello and welcome!  I too am curious about what a "drama moderator" is.  Glad to have you join us here on SMNetwork.  With your high school connection, I recommend checking out our Students and Novice SMs board if you haven't already.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: High School SM
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 10:25 am »
Hello and welcome!  I would definitely recommend having a conversation with your director/teacher.  It's been many years since I was in high school, but my experience is that though there are basic responsibilities that go along with this job, there have been different expectations of the stage manager at every level of my career - high school, college, and professionally.  Even professionally the role of the SM can vary theatre to theatre and director to director.  Communication is key to ensuring a smooth production.  Best of luck SMing your first show!
