I thought it would, so my point still stands. I just don't use it!

I'm a Doodle voter.

I picked it purely for the reason that I use it far more than I use my Apple Calendar . I very rarely receive invites that way, and I never send them out. I'm a big user of a paper diary (Moleskine FTW!), and that has proven reliable enough for me.

If Apple Calendar (or Outlook, or another alternative) doesn't count as WebCal for any reason (as well it might), then my vote becomes even stronger - I don't even know what WebCal is!

I just don't see a huge benefit for switching away from Paper.

I imagine Dropbox and Text messages (as well as Word v Web) is going to be a very close-run thing!

My early prediction would be that Word wins, followed by Camera, and Webmail running 3rd....let's see how badly that turns out!

In reference to your note about 'function matters more than the brand' - are Google Drive and Dropbox not exactly the same in that regard?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Blocking using a score
« on: Oct 22, 2014, 10:25 am »
As with most others, I use a single-sided score, then for each blocking note make a note of the system/bar/beat, and then write the blocking.

For example:

1/2/1 'K' => SL, KNEEL DS of 'C'

Personally, I don't use miniplans, except for large groups of chorus/corps.

Hope that makes sense - if not, I can try and find a picture for you?

Oh God, always call off the Piano Reduction if you can! Full Score, naturally, has much more information, but it's also much more than you need - and if you were doing a full piece, your book would be absolutely huge.

Ravel's Bolero is a lovely piece, but it's EXTREMELY repetitive! I can send you a PDF of the Piano Reduction if you like?

The Hardline / Re: Choosing your team?
« on: Sep 09, 2014, 04:53 pm »
Last year, they each fulfilled the role of DSM on one production, with no overlap. This year, the one DSM will do the same work as they did last year, as there is now only one production.

I hope this makes sense, and I hope that I understood your answer!

The Hardline / Choosing your team?
« on: Sep 09, 2014, 08:56 am »
Hi all,

I'm CSM'ing an opera next year, and I'm having issues choosing my team.

The problem comes because the company did two shows in rep with each other last year, and so I had two DSM's (Showcaller/Rehearsal SM), one on each show. Let's call them Sarah and Emily for easy reference. Now they've reverted to just one, and so I can only ask one of them back!

They're both great friends of mine, both fantastic at their job, and very easy to work with.

Emily is perhaps slightly better in her role, while Sarah is more relaxed about the 'quirkiness' of the venue and the company. Emily is very confident at controlling a room, while Sarah is easier for new colleagues to establish a rapport with. Neither of them particularly enjoys propping, so offering one of them an ASM position is out.

Any thoughts on how to choose?! And, any tips on how to break it to the unsuccessful one?

Thanks!

PS. Mods- wasn't sure on the best board to post this on, this or Employment- so I'm sorry if I got the wrong one!

Employment / Re: Earning a living.

Hi JavissDaviss,

UK based answer - and I'm making an assumption you're a student, or newly into the job market?

Yes, it is. At the start, it's hard. I kept a casual crewing job on the side for the first 12-15 months, because I wasn't confident I could survive without it.

I'm 2 years out of uni, and I'm hovering around the £20k mark. But don't get me wrong, it's hard. I have no savings, I have to do a lot of scrounging, and there are times I have to get by with £3.12 in my bank for a week while I'm waiting on invoices.  I should say that I'm not fantastic with money - if I banned myself from Starbuck and Pret, I'd be in a much healthier position!

However - until you/we have a few more years under our belts, there's not going to be decent money (and I mean decent for Stage Management in London here). There's still a lot of people around with similar skills, age, experience, and so the only thing to set us apart from our peers are the friends and contact we have. Also, W/E, or full-time at the national houses are where the money, security and benefits lie!

I'm happy to answer any further questions for you - if you like, my contact details are on my profile (I think)!

Introductions / Re: I'm Katie :)
« on: Sep 04, 2014, 12:00 pm »
Hi Katie!

As Maribeth said, the more knowledge you have of other department's work, and the work methods they use, the better! It can only improve your usefulness and resourcefulness - especially when working at a community/fringe level. It's one of the reasons why I've kept my knowledge of LX desks up to date, and do a little bit of programming on the side - it's much easier to ask for what you want/need when you can speak the same language!

I'm guessing you've already had the interview now? How did it go?

Stage Management: Other / AGMA Rates
« on: Aug 20, 2014, 09:33 pm »
Hi all,

Does anyone have a copy of the current AGMA Stage Management Rates card? Trying to compare to Equity UK, but I can't find anything online that doesn't require a password.

If you'd rather not make it public, happy to send an email address out.

TIA!

Chris
