The Green Room / Re: Sleeping in your theatre
« on: Mar 11, 2013, 10:21 pm »
Slept on our office couch last week...thankfully they're very comfortable. I had to crash overnight between tech days since there was a 15" difference in snowfall between my work and home....crazy New England! I usually have an overnight bag for these occasions in the winter that have a blanket, pillow, snacks and a change of clothes.

The Green Room / Re: Thoughts on Director Acting in Show?
« on: Mar 04, 2013, 09:15 am »
When it goes good, it goes very, very good.
And when it goes bad, it goes horrid.

Seconded. We did a production of a Moliere where the director cast himself as the main character/narrator.  It actually worked very well since the character (and I hear Moliere originally) essentially directs the actions around the stage.

You also might find that the director will continue to give notes and change things throughout the production since he's in the show and privy to mistakes and audience reactions.  I suggest keeping lines of communication VERY open so you don't get left out or miss a particular note.

The Green Room / Re: Weird Dreams
« on: Feb 25, 2013, 05:11 pm »
I have a recurring dream when I have a show running.  I normally have it the night before a matinee, and in the dream it is intermission, and it is past when I needed to call 5, but I haven't called 5 yet.  I try to call 5 but I just can't get the words out, kind of like a dream where you are running from something but no matter how long you run it is right there.  When I wake up it all seems so real, when I get to the theatre I feel like I should apologize for screwing up the previous performance.

THIS...I have this dream at some point during tech, except it's "places" being called and I have just started the show.

We have used e-cigs in the past.  We found it to work very well.  We even wrapped one in blackwrap in the shape of a pipe so a character could some marijuana.

We ended up losing 3 shows to this storm.  On Thursday they made the decision to cancel Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but they held out on cancelling the Saturday night show as long as possible. There was still a travel ban in effect in RI at the time they made the call to finally cancel (since lifted, but I still think it was a good idea to cancel...no one wants to do a comedy for 20 people).

Ditto.  We opted to cancel Friday and Saturday right off.  We decided Sunday's performance had to be canceled as of today since our town has no power...and apparently neither do the surrounding ones.

We've canceled performances for tonight and tomorrow night since we're in the 24"-30"+ range.  The manager in me was working on overdrive the last 2 days trying to coordinate backup plans, alternative rehearsal times and extra performances while the 10 year old in me thought: "SLEDDING!"

There have been a couple of occasions when I've had to sleep over at the theatre since driving home is just too dangerous.  The couches are very comfortable.

Seriously? Now I have to advocate for cell phones (currently 4-1 headset)??!!

I'm still fuming over the multi tool injustice. I'mma pull a Koch Brothers and flood this race later on if I have to.
I'm with you nick...bring down big photocopy...

Can't you use a cell phone as a headset? Last time I checked you can't use a headset as a cell phone...

The Green Room / Teddy Bears for Newtown
« on: Dec 18, 2012, 04:04 am »
Hello SMNetwork!
There's a great event going on up here in Massachusetts that I wanted to spread the word about.

After the events of last Friday in Connecticut, a local teacher and her sister started collecting teddy bears for the children of Newtown.  They have locations all over the greater Boston area where they're taking teddy bear deliveries.  They'll be driving them down and distributing them with the local newspaper on Saturday.

I was particularly shaken by the events of last Friday and was looking for some meaningful way to help.  I think what these two women are doing is incredibly sweet and hopefully will put a smile on some faces deserving of one this weekend.

So if you're in the area and have a bear to spare, please give.

Come on multi-tool!

Or as I like to call them, MacGyvers...how could you not vote for them!

I also just completed an educational position (teaching stage management so it's relevant to my SM resume). Since I'm on staff for a theatre and my job requires me to fill multiple positions, not just PSM, I'm finding a hybrid works well.  It covers what exactly I do without losing the pertinent information of a theatre resume.  I have my Theatre Experience category, then my Related Experience category (I wish there was a better name for this), then my Collegiate Experience last.

But back to your particular question...I don't mind Academic.  Educational gives off the perception that it was educational for YOU, not you who was doing the educating.  Just my 2 cents.

The Green Room / Re: Disc Golf
« on: Dec 11, 2012, 02:06 pm »
I've gone once up here in Mass (Borderland State Park) and had no previous experience at it.  I golf and can throw a frisbee, but the thought of combining the two?!

Long story short, disc golf is a blast! All the fun of regular golf but without the boredom...

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Fight Notation
« on: Nov 19, 2012, 10:58 pm »
The notation method I was taught:
C - cut
P - parry
1 - area 1
2 - area 2
etc...through 8 if memory serves (there was 5a (which was the backwards holding of 5 parry), 6 (behind back parry), 7 (upside-down 1 parry) and 8 (upside-down 2 parry).
Special moves like cloise (which is the cool slide your blade with mine), jump, punches, etc... you write out.
All this goes in two columns labeled fighter A and B.  The offensive move is written for a fighter next to the defensive move of the other fighter. Offense and defense is noted with an arrow between the columns.
Bowstaff is similar when parry-ing, but you have to specify which section of the bowstaff is attacking (1, 2 or 3/top, middle or bottom)

Hope this helps!
