Tools of the Trade / Re: Should an ASM have their kit?

It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Have you asked him if he's got sufficient kit?

Job Postings / Re: Dubai Gigs
« on: Oct 17, 2016, 01:22 pm »
I also currently have a gig in Dubai. It's for a FT Lighting Designer (theatre and night club). The guy that we just had ran into Hurricane Matthew troubles and is no longer able to make the trip. Any interest or leads would be much appreciated! I would be happy to answer any questions through PMs.

How soon do you need someone?  I know a number of LDs who are here for a while, but everyone is maxed out for a few months.

The Hardline / Re: Name change?

If you do elect to change your AEA name, modern social media will be a huge asset in communicating the change.  LinkedIn and Facebook are great tools for stuff like this!  Congrats on the nuptials :)

i had this same exact issue in grad school.

finally just said, how about you send me the report, I will look it over when I get home, and then you can send out . . . worked like a charm

Yep - this.

More than likely the SM doesn't realize that she's inconveniencing you to such a degree.  In order to solve the communication challenge, you'll need to communicate with her and let her know it's a problem.  :)

Also, when presenting a problem - don't just present the problem.  Present a solution.  Matthew's suggested approach does just that.

If the curtain never went up, there wasn't a performance.  It's not a big deal for folks to adjust performance numbers on their calendars, it's five minutes worth of work.

To answer the question of leaving was a mistake or not, you need to be honest with yourself.  Is the feedback you received honest and was simply something you didn't want to hear?  If it's a case of running from a problem with yourself that you need to address, then it's possible you made a mistake.  But, if the environment truly was as ill a fit as you describe, then you probably made the right choice in leaving.

I'd theorize it may be simpler than sharing resources. It may be that kids with siblings are socializing at earlier ages and more often than only children. Obviously, the theatre tends to require a more outgoing personality.

How about plastic welding?  Can you fuse the parts/pieces together?

It's great to hear your show did not morph into a Hitchcock film  ;D

"The fish rots from the head down."

This seems like an institutional problem with the culture of this specific company.  This behavior is clearly acceptable within the company as some of the same players are back without much change; until there is new leadership at the top the situation will not improve.

My best suggestion is to adjust your style to be as flexible as possible to fit within the dynamic that exists.  Changing the direction of the train is damned near impossible - best to hop on or you'll get run over!

IMHO any of the below points that are relevant to your specific production should be actioned and verified before the first day of tech.

If you are putting up dressing room signs while you have a full cast, the director, designers, and technicians ready to go, you're wasting everyone's time.
