Congrats!

The director always knows who he wants to call two days in advance (and never changes his mind). The rehearsal hotline records this information itself.

It's in the apple store... so I'm in!

There is a ton of information on the site, especially in the students and novices board, about how to get started.

You don't tell us where you're from-- generally speaking-- are you in a large city or a small town? Are there a lot of theatres in your area? Are they mostly non-union or union?

And, are you interested in eventually moving into doing theatre AS a day job? or are you just looking for a hobby?

Please check out the search bar on the top right as well. Some other features the site has: BTDT (Been there, done that)-- you might find some people who have worked at places near you. The internship database-- Check out some reviews for official internships and apprenticeships at theaters you might be interested in.

And, of course, feel free to keep asking us questions!

Tools of the Trade / Comm Adaptors
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:29 am »
So this is a little specific, but I'm moonlighting for a webcasting company and I'm wondering if it's possible to buy (or build) an adaptor that would allow me to listen to the casts (we use 1/4 and 1/8 in, but going back and forth between those is easy) with my 4 pin telex comm headset. I wouldn't want/need to talk, just to listen. I can't find anything intended to be used as headphones that I like as much as my comm! I know we have some sound geeks on the board and I'm comfortable soldering if I can just throw the connectors together... but I'm a little too far out of my audio shop days to remember if I can do that. Anyone know if I can buy/make anything like this? Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I'm in NYC doing a corporate gig/hanging out with a friend, then headed to Boston and Florida in quick sequence to see various cousins!

I'm a huge fan of the Eagle Creek packing system: http://www.eaglecreek.com/travel-system
Their products help you to compact your belongings and keep them wrinkle free.

I've been working for an opera company that doesn't have workstations, so we're all working off of personal laptops. They also have a printer system that doesn't allow macs printer permissions. On top of making it possible to use a personal computer for work without eating up tons of space, it also makes it easier for those "hey, can you print this for me" moments.

I've never taken over a show myself, but I'm curious: do you guys find there to be a huge difference in taking over a show when you're an asm versus an outside sm?

Hi Amy!
In addition to the discussions linked below, and Maribeth's great suggestions, a search of the site (see the top right of the webpage) will bring up a ton of topics about resumes from a number of different perspectives. I'm going to go ahead and lock this topic to avoid creating duplicates, but feel free to ask specific questions on some of those posts!

Welcome :)

Employment / Re: Career Goals
« on: Apr 01, 2012, 02:50 pm »
I have found my five year plan to be extremely useful. Even between the version I did 3-4 months ago to now, there are things I was opposed to including that I am definitely interested in now, as well as things options available to me that I hadn't be aware of. It was of the most help to me, so far, when I was deciding whether to join AEA and AGMA. The offers for the two came in quick succession and I wasn't sure how viable an option it was for me to join so quickly after college. By comparing the work I had done (I also keep a master list for that: what show, where, with who) to my five year plan goals, it became much easier to make a decision.

wonder what the SM is calling!?

This. I'm also really curious as to what the op situation is.

I recently did a world premiere musical in a venue without a pit, so we had the 5 piece band backstage. It took up so much real estate that pretty much all of the set pieces (everything was on wheels or sliders and configured in different ways in relation to one another to form the different settings) had to originate from one side of the stage. Transitions were not nearly as clean looking as they had been in rehearsal (when we were under the impression we could move scenery from a loading area straight to stage. And it was so. hard. to talk to my asm on comm. In the future, definitely not a venue I'd like to play with live music, unless it's going to be onstage, which I have also done with much more success.

Employment / Re: Health insurance

I'm still on my parents plan thanks to obamacare, so for me the focus is less about health weeks and more about pay. I am interested in learning more about Plan B. I know AGMA is planning to do a session on it during the DC/Baltimore area membership meeting this weekend; hopefully, I can make it to that!
