The stage manager for the symphony here is IATSE and is paid on those rates and regulations.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Question about DePaul

looks like you don't have to take classes in catholicism, specifically, but you may need to take some kind of core courses in religion/theology.  I wouldn't just brush these off as completely non-relevant to your major -- these core classes are part of the reason for attending a liberal arts university as opposed to a conservatory.  DePaul is a pretty liberal place in a pretty liberal town, and they're not going to try to indoctrinate you.  I went to a christian liberal arts college and had to take two religion classes -- I loved them!

Your best bet would be to check with the admissions department and get a definite answer.

This sounds like a complete violation of privacy to me!  Scary scary scary!  You never know what kind of weird people are out there, who's got restraining orders, stalkers, etc.  Sounds dire, but you never know and you can't be too careful.  I've had actors go so far as to tell me that I am the only one who can have access to certain numbers (such as work numbers that are emergency only because they don't want to be bombarded with calls, or cell phone numbers because they've had problems with stalkers before, etc.). I would never think about posting a contact sheet in plain view for all to see!  I keep them under lock and key when not in use at the theatre, and on all contact sheets, or anything with identifying information on it, there is a big note on every page that says, "all contact information is confidential and may not be distributed without prior consent from the individual."  Unless they sign a release at the beginning of the process that says the theatre is at liberty to release their contact info or something like that.

I don't even know the show in question or anybody involved and I am scared for them!  If I were you, I would say something to theatre management -- whoever your supervisor is (is there a production manager?) Don't talk directly to the stage manager since you really don't have any authority or jurisdiction over her.

Before you give out emails or phone #s for future work and possibilities, you should always contact the person first to make sure its okay.  I have certain people in my address  book who have given me a blanket OK -- anytime I want to recommend them for something I am more than free to distribute their emails and phone numbers.  But others I know want to be asked -- for whatever reason.  We should always work to respect those requests and people's right to privacy as much as possible.

How many costumes will have to be washed out?  Is creating two sets of the costume a viable option?  This gives you more time to wash out blood so that you are able to do it properly and completely and aren't putting wet clothes onto an actor for the second run of the day.

Amie --

Yes, I have done this on several shows in the community -- Ladies of the camellias, where I was the rehearsal stage manager and then Lorien came in a week before tech and took everything over, and finished out the run (I left completely because of my new job at the ballet); and on Seven Passages, where Angie and I were co-stage managers. Now, that was a whole different ball of wax because we were dealing a new script so there was definitely more than enough work for two stage managers to do.

I think you just need to figure out what you want to be in charge of, and what you want to put her in charge of.  And the most important thing in getting the cast to trust her is that YOU need to trust her, and emphasize that she is an extension of you and they need to give you/her the same exact respect.

Out of curiosity, what show and who are you splitting with?  PM me.  =)  I already miss circle this summer, BTW!

Hmm...don't know about the sick days clause -- what does their contracts say?  Does it specify that sick days are sick days and a doctors note is required? If all it says is "days off," I don't know if you're able to specify a rule like that in your list.  For example, our dancers are allotted "six missed days" over the course of their contracted time.  Now, obviously, we hope they're honest enough to call in only when they're sick, but we can't monitor that and because their contract simply reads "missed days" we can't require a doctors note from them.

On the other hand, you don't want TOO much experience...because then they'll wonder why you're going back to school when you're already out there working.

Hi MacDouga, welcome to the forum!

There are lots of users here who work in community theatre (myself included!), and generally we deal with issues that come up with all the joys of that kind of theatre on a show-by-show or incident-by-incident basis.  Generally those topics end up on this board (Plays and Musicals) because that comprises the bulk of what community theatre presents.

So feel free to ask and bring up and deliberate away!

ZFX and Foy are typically going to give you one-time use rigs and equipment.  If you're looking to install permanent rigs (or at least purchase equipment - it's not necessarily something you'd want to leave up in your theatre all the time) you may have to look at finding an independent contractor (which foy or ZFX may be able to assist with) who will supervise the purchase of equipment and install.

To any students at NIU -- my heart goes out to you and your friends and families. What a tragedy.  The school and its students, as well as the families of the victims will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Taking Notes
« on: Feb 08, 2008, 10:17 am »
I keep a legal pad to my right so that I can just scrawl notes as we go....as long as I look at them immediately after the run I am able to recall them to mind and decipher them long enough to type them or re-write them.

But I've never been in a situation where I have THAT much to do that I can't even take one note.

Perhaps that is why the topic deviated from your original question.  People want to weigh in on this topic even without the practical experience.  It helps to put things in the second tense sometimes, when trying to work something out for ourselves and how we would handle a particular situation.  And remember that this is the internet, which is always like a giant game of telephone!

Depending on where you are located, you can probably find free lance foley artists who love work like that.  Call the nearest film production company and see if they can give you some contacts.

And I think you need some sort of permit for that, from the city, and from the venue.  But maybe it differs by city.  I know you do where I am.  The company you order the tank from can probably fill you in all those legal details.

For me, it usually depends on my board op. If I have a very trustworthy/experienced board op, I'll be fine letting them take cues on their own. I'll still give them standbys, but I'll say, "Standby Light Q 22 to take on your own visual when such and such happens" to remind them what they're watching out for.

You could get theatre administration involved here, since the integrity of the show is being compromised.  It would be perfectly legit to submit something in writing saying that you feel, as a crew member on the show, that the stage manager is not upholding their contractual obligation to maintain the artistic integrity of the show.
