The Green Room / Re: Things Stage Managers Say

Sadly, that's something I've also had to say to actors....along with the "no licking" constraint. Yikes!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Screwing Up
« on: Jan 29, 2012, 01:11 pm »
(on that note, one of my key frustrations is how we graciously allow actors to screw up and fix things, but - esp w directors who run rather than tech during tech - we are not allowed that same grace, expected to get it right the first or second time with no grace beyond that, with no rehearsal other than during tech, and even knowing things look different and need to be retimed from the booth. ARGHH.)

Just to add, tho - yes directing is a good skill to learn. Because for most professional theater jobs, you will need to train the understudies and give notes to maintain the show. And having language for that and a sense of how it works is invaluable.

The thing I'd look for whether you are required to have a full day off or a daylight day of rest versus a separate contract or a concessioned one-off.

But yes, first line of defense is your AEA rep

Self-Promotion / Re: Miracle on 34th Street-the musical

I love that musical!!! BTW the best known song is actually "it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" = score title is "pine cones and holly berries" but there was a rewrite and Bing Crosby made it famous with his version in the 60s or so - but there is some magnificent music in that score!

Love this - and sometimes it's hard to get newer ASMs to hear these things, they so want to be the SM instead of learning....so many opportunities to learn new ways of doing things, and so many individual responsibilities that need to be handled separate from what the PSM or SM does so one hopes the ASM is good at those things!

Hmmm - suddenly the overnight shift is happening an hour earlier. One must presume that the main office for the folks operating this in fact live in an area without DST....?

don't forget the magician option - for help w a levitation gag  we paid a wonderful magician with a fabulous bottle of good whiskey as he didn't want to take cash

565
Not sure where you are, but check a magic shop for help - magicians do this all the time and might be willing to share some secrets w your technical people.

566
yes thanks, I had sent a PM that way first - posted as well in case there were others who simply hadn't updated their BTDT list - amusingly, so far they both did the same basic thing!

Do you know what liquid was used as the vomit? That would also be helpful, since clearly the costumes need to be cleaned a lot more often....

568
Has anyone done God of Carnage and willing to share some hints abt the extreme gags - in particular the projectile vomiting?

(Ms Reza always seems to put something seemingly impossible into every script, eh?)

Thank you so much for your assistance!

Edit to subject line.-Rebbe

God of Carnage anyone?

thank you

Just to add an interesting experience to the mix -

I once did a vanity production with an actress who...  let's say, presumed more than her role without fulfilling her own. She kept threatening to quit until one day, the director took her up on it, replaced her, and stood his ground when she insisted she hadn't meant it.

And, yes, you are being idealistic to think we can "all just get along." So, so sorry.....
