Introductions / Re: Young Apprentice Open to New Knowledge
« on: Nov 08, 2013, 01:10 pm »
I am here looking for advice, help, a bad joke, anything.

Hi and welcome, Janell! I think you'll find all of the above. Lots of us have posted about practical experience being one of our most valuable resources- I think doing an apprenticeship is a great learning experience. (I know mine was.) Looking forward to having you on the boards!

Articles from the Old Site / Re: Tips: Spike Tape on Demand
« on: Nov 03, 2013, 02:44 pm »
Would this be something that is more useful outside of college/university theatre?

A useful situation is backstage, when you may not need (or have room for) 12 different rolls of spike tape both SR and SL, but it is useful to have a few feet of a variety of colors to spike furniture. Also convenient when you get onstage, ready to spike something, and realize there is already a green spike nearby- you can easily switch to another color without having to go back and get a new roll of tape.

Thank you notes are great- especially if they are heartfelt and personal. I think thank you notes are a personal choice and if that's what feels right to you, then go for it. But, if you're concerned about it being overkill, consider another expression of gratitude, like doughnuts at an early meeting or the first round of beers. :)

Similar to the above posters, I don't have experience taping glass props (though I have heard of it before). But I have had glass props that were covered in a clear resin to protect them. It didn't stop them from breaking but did help the pieces stick together a bit, rather than flying everywhere. It does change the finish of the glass item to a more textured matte finish, so if it's something that needs to be shiny and smooth-looking this may not be the way to go. (It doesn't look terrible, but might be visible in a smaller house).

Job Postings / SM needed for Happenstance Theatre (MD/Touring)
« on: Oct 18, 2013, 07:02 pm »
Happenstance Theatre seeks Tour Manager/Stage Manager for New Orleans Fringe. Ideally person would be available to see show Round House Theatre in Silver Spring, before we pack it up and drive down to NOLA on the 17th of November. Tech is November 19, then we run the 20 - 24. Housing and Travel are included. Pay is $500.

Person needs to be able to deal with Fringe craziness, quick load-in, short tech, program board, run lights, 15 minute load out after every show, etc. It's a whirlwind, but we are a great company and it will be a wonderful adventure.

Please contact Sabrina Mandell at happenstancetheater@gmail.com if interested.

In DC right now- Ford's Theatre's production of The Laramie Project is cancelling performances due to their performance space being shut down (as a National Park Service site). They did a performance in the rehearsal room of a nearby theatre (Woolly Mammoth) and are presenting 2 free performances at a nearby church. A terrible situation but interesting to see how they adapted to relocating to other performance spaces.

How many kids are in the show? If it's just a handful, can you identify which days the kids are needed a week ahead of time, but give everyone else the schedule a day in advance?

You can also have a conversation with the cast at the start of rehearsals, explaining that you can give them a weekly schedule, but that it is subject to change with ____ amount of notice. If they have a schedule concern, like needing to schedule a doctor's appointment, they should talk to you.

Another factor is how likely you are to actually stick to the schedule....If you know the director makes an hour-by-hour schedule a month in advance but is unlikely to stick to it, it might be better not to disseminate the information to the whole cast. You could make a simpler schedule that everyone gets (e.g. Tues- Act 1 Scenes 1-3, Wed- Act 1 Scene 4 and Act 2 Scenes 1-4) and break it down into specifics a day in advance.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Production Software

This topic has come up a lot. Try doing a search in the upper right-hand corner of the page. A search for the word "software" will yield a good number of results.
