We've got a couple of first level matches with decent stakes coming up. Paper vs Glow Tape and Post-its vs Spike Tape could both be tight, as might screw gun vs 3 hole punch.

Interesting. The other 3 matches have 26 votes. This one has 28.

I am guessing that since this poll went up first, somebody voted on it and forgot about the other 3 matches.

However, part of me suspects shenanigans.

From GalFriday's post in the last round... "Power Switches All The Way."

Excellent! Thanks for reporting back! Now write down the steps you took to prepare, and make them into a checklist. Next time you'll have a guideline to follow to ensure you're as comfortable going in (if not moreso) as you were today. Keep it up!

For those of you new to sports terms, this is a version of the "home court advantage." A venue populated by stage managers is probably one of the few places where duct tape would be at risk of losing in the first round.

Let's see how the whole thing plays out? If there's enough interest by the time we reach the finals and we can come up with enough new items to keep a second year of DM interesting, I'll be happy to run it again.

There are a whole bunch of things that have come to me over the past 4 days that could have been introduced, but they just didn't occur to me while I was drawing up the bracket.

Coffee
WD-40
Soft Drinks
Ibuprofen
Tie line
Knee pads and/or Work Gloves

However, I don't think I could have come up with enough to add another side to the bracket and starting with 64 items would have been a bit much.

Round 1 has wrapped and Round 2 has begun. The bracket on page 1 was deleted and replaced (after approximately 80 downloads!) with an updated version for fans who are tuning in late.

The final results of Round 1:
Gaff Tape 55 (W), Staples 2
Binder 37 (W), Digital Light Board 19
Pencil 51 (W), Crescent Wrench 2
Multitool 51 (W), Unlubed Condoms 2

Congratulations to all the round 1 winners, you're headed to the sweet sixteen of Decemberrrrr Madness!

Just remember to use Real Coke, not Diet Coke. :D

It's the "Floor Taping Bowl" here in the University Division this week as two favorite tools for translating ground plans to rehearsal space make their debut. The tape measure brings a nicely adjustable style to the game, but the protractor has been known to cover all the angles. Which will win? The experts have made their opinions known, but only the fans will figure it out for sure.

Polls close at midnight CST on Friday.

Round 2 of the commercial division sees the introduction of another candidate predicted to go all the way to the finals - the versatile and popular Laptop. However, stage managers who prefer to use paper scripts will know the value of the Straight Edge for writing cues and effectively staying on book. If last week's digital-analog head to head of binder vs light board is any indicator, this could be an interesting match.

Poll will remain open through Friday at midnight CST.

The Regional Division is home to what will probably be the most interesting of this round's battles: Velcro, master of the quick change, vs the Headset. Far from the new kids on the block, Velcro has been available to the mass market since 1955 and headsets since 1910, although best-known theatre manufacturer Clear-com didn't join the fray until the late 1960's. Both have a well-established history as useful contributors to the stage manager's job.

This poll will run through Friday at midnight, CST.

The 2nd round of the regular season for the Community League pits backstage preferences against real world preferences. In the backstage world, a quality flashlight is a class symbol, while duct tape is pretty much universally loathed. Outside of backstage, the standard issue flashlights are pale (pun intended) versions of their backstage kin, but duct tape is practically idolized as the stuff that "holds the universe together."

This poll will run through Friday at midnight, CST.

We're coming up on the end of the 3rd quarter here at Gadget Stadium, and from up here I can tell you the scoring has been fast and furious. All four matches have seen at least 50 votes since the starting whistle, and the crowd is going wild.

The binder/light board match remains the one to watch, with both sides going for the brass rings and binder really needing to work on its defensive game as light board creeps up to 1/3 of the total 53 votes. Also seeing 53 votes is the no-contest Gaff Tape vs. Staples & Paperclips. The Stapler is barely holding itself together at 2 votes, and with less than 12 hours on the clock it looks like this match is all bound up for Gaff.

Fan favorites pencil & multitool also continue to dominate their matches against c-wrench & unlubed condoms, although the underdogs have each gained a vote since the end of the first quarter. With a over 45 point spreads in each of these rounds I just don't see how the wrench & condoms can catch up before the clock runs out.

A last minute rally could very well tip the balance for binder and lead to a surprise upset, though. Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion tomorrow and the start of the next round for all four leagues.
