Hey all, I'm looking for an editable version of Macbeth! (If possible, I'd like to not have to go through and manually format the whole thing myself.)

Thanks!

So I did some number crunching. The final match went to Paper by one vote and due to our structure of tournament-style this means that it technically won. However, if you look at all of the votes awarded over the course of the entire tournament it lost the popular vote to laptop by a landslide. In case you were curious about how the board ranked all 32 items based on total cumulative votes, here's the list.

Laptop                160
Paper                137
Headset                118
Pencil                109
Binder                102
Gaff Tape            100
Stopwatch            77
Photocopier            75
Multitool            69
Cell Phone            66
Tape Measure        61
Flashlight            58
Highlighter            37
Spike Tape            37
Scale Rule            36
Three Hole Punch    26
Digital Light Board    19
Blue Gel            18
Screw Gun            17
Hammer                12
Glow Tape            10
Post its            10
Call button            5
Watered Down Tea    3

Thanks! I wanted to make the laptop scowl like McKayla Maroney but decided that the headset's jaunty approach to wearing its medal was enough. :D

Ladies and gentlemen, after a long tournament and many exciting battles, I'm pleased to announce that we have a winner! The finalists were very closely matched and finished within one point of each other, but at the closing whistle the final score was...

Paper 24 (W)
Laptop 23

... giving us no firm answer as to which is better, but at least allowing us to end the match before we had to pay double overtime to the strike crew.

I'm glad we could bring a little joy and silliness to your winter! It remains to be seen if this will return next year. The final matches show that it really does depend on the whim of the participants, and we could very well have seen any of our top 8 make it to the stand. (As it was I had to determine the third place finalist by margin of victory.) This means that we could certainly do it again and with a selection of new items to liven things up it could still be fun and exciting. Since the whole thing was pretty much a middle-of-the-night inspiration with very little planning (obviously) I welcome your suggestions as to how it could be improved if we bring it back again.

Hopefully it also gave you an opportunity to discuss what you do with your family - I know that there's a whole group of folks in central California who were introduced to stage management due to my constant dashing for the computer while I was traveling over the holidays.

This board will remain in view for a few days and then will go into hiding as a child board of Tools of the Trade, as most of the discussion is quite useful for providing new ideas on using the competing gadgets.

Thanks to all who participated in December Madness!

For the IDMC,

We've got just over two hours left before the end of the match. The IDMC has addressed the issue of ties in this post. In the event that the current two point spread is reduced to a tie when time runs out, the poll will be opened for a sudden death overtime.

Well rock-paper-scissors is not an option.

I would recommend doing everything you can to travel light. ASM duties in rehearsal tend to be more active and will often require you to assemble (and enact!) the preset and scene shifts alone. Your SM will be maintaining the big bible including the blocking, so you'll be able to lighten your load considerably. You may even be able to run your script double-sided.

In most cases I used to put my ASM on book, although some SMs like to keep that task to themselves. I would do what you can to keep your script set up for prompting, with line numbers as well as page numbers so you can easily reference flubbed words.

Since you'll be running around perhaps more than a three-ring binder can handle, consider three hole punching, a portable spiral bound script with a bunch of blank paper in the back for the script itself and space for notes. You can remove it as needed and still have space for notes that actors give you while you're doing shifts, and then add them to your more formal shift paperwork when you get back to your station.

Sure. If you know how to look up domain ownership it should be easy for you to find the mailing address for IDMC headquarters.

As for the poll deadlines, the end of the poll is still midnight CST at the end of Friday the 4th. If the intro post to this thread wasn't enough of an indicator, I was really ill and very much loaded up with cold meds when this round started.

Also, TIED AGAIN WUT.

504
Sorry, poll apparently has been defunct for a bit, voting is now reopened.

One would think that the phrasing and level of detail would depend on the nature of the position, no? If the individual is applying for a position where automation is obviously required, then an expanded section discussing types of automation and levels of comfort would be de rigeur. OTOH if you're applying to SM "The Music Man" in the Whoville Baptist Church and Community Center then perhaps that particular line item is meant to be impressive more than functional, and can just be dropped gently into the "Special Skills" section.

As the last time I did any stage management was 2003, I did more shows without laptop than with. Most of the theaters I worked had dial up internet connections, if any at all, and wifi was in a very early form if it existed at all. Smartphones didn't exist yet. There were laptops in the rehearsal room (without internet) as early as 1998, and although I owned one around that time I didn't bring it to rehearsal with me as I didn't want to risk it getting swiped on the train.

In fact, if laptops had been prevalent and affordable when I was still doing theater this site would not exist at all. I created this site so I could download my forms from a central server regardless of my location.

Laptop: a portable, usually battery-powered microcomputer small enough to rest on the user's lap. (source: dictionary.com)

Not tablet, not desktop.

508
None of these tools is useful on it's own. All of them require additional items. I will grant paper and some means of applying ink, and laptop with electricity and software. These are all items to be found in a theater or the stage manager can provide them. However, internet access is still not all-pervasive and, short of tethering, not really something you can BYO. Therefore, I'm benching internet from team laptop.

509
That's correct. The Laptop (in theory) needs at least power and software. Paper (in theory) needs some means of applying ink, although one could argue that there are some uses for blank paper. Both require input from humans to reach their maximum potential, as is the case with nearly all of the tools in the competition. Perhaps this is a question of comparative potential?

"Better" is a deliberately vague word choice.

510
Remember that the team is Laptop, not Laptop + internet.
