Okay I can see we've got some pros who want to jump in. Take it away, everybody.

Funny note - for most of that article I had a kind of detached "oh, well that's too bad." When I saw that the media coverage had provoked an OSHA investigation? That's when I winced.

Super Bowl.
Lights.

What is your plan of action, padawans?

(As always with our student challenges, please give our student members a few days before the pros take a crack at it.)

The Green Room / The things we give up for theatre
« on: Feb 03, 2013, 03:17 pm »
I've seen a lot of theatre people on my Facebook feed today talking about how they're missing the Super Bowl due to tech or performance. I'm sure many of us have missed social gatherings and family events because of our work. What's the toughest thing you've had to miss due to theatre?

The Green Room / Re: What about my dog?

I used to have a lop bun. There's no way I would have taken her into the stock housing situations that I've experienced. Just the thought of bunnyproofing stock housing is terrifying to me, let alone ensuring that hay and bunny-safe litter are available and a vet who can handle exotics is in the area. If your employer is providing rental housing, the lease may not permit buns - landlords tend to get very jumpy about them (NPI) if they value their baseboards and molding.

I'd contact your local House Rabbit Society to find a reputable bunnysitter for the summer.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Android Phone Apps
« on: Feb 01, 2013, 07:47 pm »
I now have both an Android phone and tablet. Here are some that I've found to be helpful:

Evernote - obviously.
Zite - you give it a topic, it serves up a magazine of blog entries about that topic, or builds a zine based on your Google Reader feeds.
SeeClickFix - If your city uses Open311 to report non-emergency service issues (graffiti, potholes, broken streetlights, etc.) you can use SCF to report problems, geocode and with photos.
Airdroid - Turns your phone into a mini webserver so you can browse to it from your desktop, pass stuff from clipboard to clipboard, and send files... among other things. I use it so I can send SMS from my desktop.
CamCard Free - scan business cards with OCR
Sleepbot Tracker - I have trouble staying on a consistent wake/sleep schedule. This lets me chart when I've slept and what sort of sleep debt I'm racking up.
ScanToPDF - turns phone photos into PDFs. I use it for taking photos of contracts in the field. I'm guessing you guys could use it for sending snapshots of, say, sign in sheets from the call board to a cloud server quickly.

The Green Room / Re: Tax Season!

Heh. Actually I happened to be doing some demographic research for another project that also involved NAICS codes, so I had the URL handy. Not sure if that means "awesome" or "excessively nerdy."

Stage Management: Other / Re: Stage Managing for Dance
« on: Jan 31, 2013, 06:51 pm »
Ez, this post is from the very first incarnation of SMNetwork - it's over a decade old now. Back in the day I would anonymize the names of contributors, but keep the original emails so I could look up authorship. When we switched over to a forum format, I carried over some of the old static content like this piece as archived posts. I unfortunately no longer have access to any of my email accounts from 2002 though, so I have no idea who originally wrote this.

If you wrote this back in 2002 please let me know. Otherwise, I am sure we've got some other very capable and funny dance stage managers who will be happy to step up and give advice. (Right guys?)

One of my friends from high school just posted a link to the application process for Hartford Stage Company apprenticeships for the 2013-14 season. There is no stage management apprenticeship but there are many other positions in backstage and arts administration areas.

Apprentices get a stipend, parking and housing. Deadline for apprenticeship applications is March 1. Interns can get college credit, and internship applications are accepted year round.

Info here.

I'd say 711310 (performing arts management with facilities) if you're resident at a particular house, and 711320 (performing arts management without facilities) if you're touring/itinerant.

I have very big ideas.  It makes the coding part quite difficult.  :)

The Hardline / Re: EMC program Pros. vs. Cons
« on: Jan 27, 2013, 06:08 pm »
If the Chicago scene is anything like it was 10 years ago, EMC won't scare off the non-AEA employers. People seemed to be genuinely pleased for you if you got your card but given the enormous amount of non-union activity that was (and still is) out here I wasn't faulted for being EMC for years.

We've done this before. Sorry. Continue over in the original thread if you feel so inclined.

This could be fun. Do you have strange items that you haul around with you based on prior experiences? What are they, and how did they come to be part of your standard equipment?

For example, I once had a fly cue from the booth for a practical. During one preview, the line clipped my glasses and sent them sailing out the booth window to the floor below. I didn't have to stop the show, but I did have to have an deck crew member tell me over com when certain actors hit their marks for the remainder of the act, as I couldn't even see out of the booth, let alone all the way down to the stage. Fortunately the glasses landed near the sound board and were retrieved by intermission, but from that point on I always carried a lanyard for my glasses in the kit.
