8-but video game world.

(what the heck is that?)

(and the reply following that clearly has no idea what a stage manager does....)

On a non-technical level, bathrooms and dressing rooms.

There are classic examples all over Los Angeles. I would say it's a before/after example except there are still small spaces where audience and performers share a single bathroom that is inaccessible to the cast from house open to house clear, where there is neither space nor privacy to change backstage, and drinking water is what you bring for yourself. And this doesn't include things like trash (and who takes it out), detritus laying about and general filth.

Employment / Re: High School Stage Management Salary

Is the company community or professional (even on a tiny scale)? And, can this lead to something? Is it a good for your resume or have good connections to a next opportunity? While I don't believe SMs shd EVER work for free, if you are starting out and building a resume, it's normal to work for dirt cheap, especially if it can lead to something. But you need to also protect yourself. If you haven't worked outside of a school environment - which is a very, very different beast from professional and community theater - this could be a great learning opportunity. You can give yourself a limit (time frame, number of shows, or if you have learned what they can teach) and reevaluate then. But plan on your first job being minimal pay, and keep eyes and ears open to learn as much as you can. Once you have proven your value (and learned about life in the non-school world), you have bargaining power.

I took over a short transfer from out of town and was the only local - and the only female - on a pretty testoserone-heavy show. The guys - both actors and the ASM - were very protective of their routines and their fight call, so I took a deep breath and a step back and just did my best. We closed last weekend, and they insisted that they take me out to a very very nice dinner preshow, brought me lovely gifts and gave me a beautiful thank you card for taking such good care of them, letting me know that I had earned both their respect and their hearts. I nearly wept after our final performance.

Can anyone help me out with the score to Ain't Misbehavin? Thanks

The Green Room / Re: Gifts and thankyou cards

I always - ALWAYS - do a small (cheap) gift for my designers, director, crew and producer. Acknowledgment and thanks are always appropriate, especially to those who aren't always celebrated publicly and/or at all. And while I used to always do something for my actors, I've noticed that opening nite is no longer something they seem to do, so that is no longer automatic. But I have been enjoying making little mini-cards that tie to the show as a memory, printing them out 6 or 8 to a page w the title, company and date, and putting one at each person's spot for opening nite.

For future ref, altho they can get loud, fans can be your best back-up if sweltering is the only other option...

Stage managers have their own single stall bathrooms adjacent to the booth.

Because we can't wait in the public lines or always have time to walk to wherever the dressing rooms are in that theater, and a 3-4 hr show can sometimes be too long to go without a pit stop.

All actors and company managers will have read the contract and know to what they are, and are not, entitled.

(actually, several contracts allow a daylight day of rest in the week before first paid public performance)

No wireless microphones are allowed, all company members will know to project adequately.

...except when working with electronic musical instruments or recorded music, in which case the sound engineer knows how to balance the show so it isn't so loud as to cause ear bleeds and the voices can always be heard above the amplified sound.

(FWIW I have never, ever had a response from an e-script request. Never. Wondering if others have?)
