Visiting schools can make such a difference.  I applied to a billion schools and several programs (back before I had chosen a major) and visiting them really helped me narrow it down.  One school was nearby so I visited it twice.  I am glad I did.  It was such a small school, I recognized people as they walked by.  I knew right then that it was not the school for me.

Professional definately trumps educational.

I went to a liberal arts school and firmly believe that is the way to go.

Some outrageously high number of college students change their majors in the course of their studies.  Why limit yourself at the exact time you should be expanding.

Defenitaly wait until grad school to seek a super specialized degree.

Now . . . the question is what to drink at the tech table.  For years, I have asked my LX crew to install a blender so just once in my career I can call a hold, and then have the sound of my blender making a pina colda be heard in the house.

I would give money to be there for that.

On a side note, I have an excellent new blender perfect for frozen drinks.  It has a tap.  Though I prefer double margaritas over pina colada myself. (I tend to do a one to one ratio margarita mix to tequila, though not at the tech table of course.)

I was thankful that at least we had the good taste to put the TV on mute and play music during dinner.

Hey did anyone else see the Dallas cheerleader totally get knocked on her butt?

I agree with your choice to highlight your local experience.

Workshops in NYC (and I assume DC) are important to include and happen a lot.  It is a great skill to have and definately worthy of a slot on your resume.

When you get more full scale credits you can eliminate your smaller credits or simplify them all into one line.

A Halls dispenser!  So cool.

So lame that they quit sending the goodies though.  Halls taste bad anyway  . . .

So, partially inspired by this thread and partially inspired by my new job, I have revamped my resume.  I rearranged my categories and switched from a "month and year" date to just "year"

So now the headings are:

Theatre

Title of Play     Company                      Position           Director                                          Year(s)

Dance

Company         Title of Piece or Tour      Position           Artistic Director or Choreographer       Year(s)

I still maintain that years are important to include.  I have had several long term jobs/ tours and the best way I have of indicating that is to include the years.

For dance tours I don't include the titles of each piece because often the rep was more than 15 pieces, so I just put the title of the tour.

I pretty much always just type my report in the body of the email.  I only write the categories that I need and can address things directly to people by name.  It is a bit more casual, but I happen to think encourages people to actually read the reports.

I have a bunch of friends that studied theater or dance at SMU, not sure about their tech program, but you should check it out.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Happy Stage Management Memories?
« on: Nov 17, 2006, 04:02 pm »
Hmm.  Over the years, I have built up quite a number of happy stage management memories.  I couldn't keep doing this job if I didn't have them.

My happiest was probably my birthday 2005.  I was on a long European tour with a dance company and we had our opening night in Amsterdam on my birthday.

We were in tech all day and I was getting over a nasty cold.  But all through the day little gifts kept appearing on my console.  My dancers wrote sweet cards and left treats, it was so great.

Then after the show at the big reception with board member, etc, I was presented with a cake and EVERYONE sang to me.

Then we went out and celebrated as one can only really do in Amsterdam . . .

I like to have dates.  I have had several jobs that have lasted several years.  I think that having dates to show that is important.  (For example I toured with one dance company for 3 years, without dates you might think I was with them for only one month.)
