Job Postings / SM needed for ArtStream (DC area)
« on: Jul 11, 2014, 11:35 am »
ArtStream, Inc. is a regional nonprofit arts organization whose mission is to create artistic opportunities for individuals in communities traditionally underserved by the arts. We are currently seeking Stage Managers for our 2014-2015 Inclusive Theatre Company season. The Stage Manager (SM) supports the director in rehearsals and classes, both through creative input and administrative tasks. The SM also oversees the technical process by leading the crew, managing backstage, and calling the show. We are a growing organization and are looking to hire new and dedicated people.

About ArtStream
ArtStream is a consortium of professional artists whose purpose is to inspire and help heal through various art forms such as theatre, puppetry, music, and dance. We believe that the transformative power of the arts should be available to everyone, especially those who are challenged by disabilities or life circumstances. Our programs not only benefit the individuals involved, but also the community at large. More importantly, we have seen the power of the arts at work and are excited to spread the “magic.” It is the fervent mission of ArtStream to fill the gap in arts programming between what is currently being provided in these communities and what is needed. Please be sure to review our website before applying, at www.art- stream.org.

About Inclusive Theatre Companies
The companies (located in Arlington, VA and Montgomery County, MD) are made up of actors with and without cognitive disabilities. Each company is directed by a theatre professional who is trained and experienced in working with persons with disabilities. Throughout the rehearsal process, the company works together to generate ideas for an original script through group input and improvisation techniques. With help from the artistic team, the Director crafts a script and the Music Director creates original songs. The show is memorized, blocked and performed for the public. Each original production is designed to showcase each actor’s unique talents.

Skills/Qualifications
BA (desirable, but not required); Stage Management experience; Strong oral & written communication skills; Interpersonal & Organizational skills; Ability to work independently with initiative; Some knowledge of disability, accessibility, and inclusion practices; Experience and/or interest in working with persons with disabilities; Genuine desire to further develop your theatre experience; Passion for theatre and a belief in the power of the arts.

Salary
This is a contract position. We pay competitively.

Commitment
The start date varies upon location. Each Inclusive Company rehearses for 6 months, once a week in the evening for 1.5-2 hours up until tech week. During Tech Week, the commitment is every evening Mon-Fri plus scheduled Load In, Performances and Strike. We expect all SMs to be present for each contracted rehearsal and arrive early/stay slightly afterwards, for any needed set-up and tear-down. SMs are also required to attend production meetings as stated in contract.

How to Apply
Please email a cover letter explaining why you want to work with ArtStream and a work résumé to Jennie Lutz at jobs@art- stream.org. Applicants will be contacted for interviews on a rolling basis. We plan on making final decisions by Sept 2014.

If you have any questions, please email jobs@art-stream.org or visit our website: www.art-stream.org.
(No phone calls please)

Stage Management: Other / Re: Royal Opera Live

Love this! Thanks for sharing.

Ask questions and take good notes. If you can get some time to walk the backstage track beforehand and ask questions of the SM or another backstage crew person, that would give you a little bit of a dry run. If there's anything tricky, like a fast quick change, it would be worth seeing if you can practice it with the actor once, or at least talk through it.

Break a leg!

E-SCRIPTS READ ME:

Escripts are useful, and we are OK with you sharing the work you've done in digitizing scripts for stage management purposes.  However, it is a VERY touchy legal ground and as such we have some very strict rules that must be followed.  If we see repeated violations of these rules, we will have to put an end to the escript exchange.

OK.  Here's the rules.

1. If you (or your company) don't have the rights to produce a show, don't ask for the script.
2. You may only request copies of scripts here.  No audio.  No video.  Just escripts for use in setting up prompt books.
3. If someone asks for an escript and you have it, do NOT post it here publicly, nor admit here publicly that you have it.  Offer your copies by PM, email or instant message.
4. If you have received a script from someone, do NOT thank them publicly here.  Do not acknowledge that you have received it in the thread. Do not cross them off your list or edit your post to say, "Got it, Thanks!" Just leave it alone. Thank the sender profusely and eloquently off site via email, send them flowers & liquor, but do it off of the SMNetwork servers.
5. No unsolicited offers of e-scripts, please.
6. You may not request an e-script as your very first post to SMNetwork.
7. Posts more than six months old will be removed.

If you can leave a digital copy of your files, I'm sure that will help as well as the paper copy.

If there's a structure for the design/production process, document that and how it was created. (i.e. 14 weeks before load-in - 1st design meeting, 12 weeks- preliminary designs due, etc)

Keeping a document about each venue is helpful- who to call if the A/C goes out, max capacity, schedule of cleaning service, etc.

Is this for future SMs of the festival, or future PMs?

Hello and welcome aboard! We seem to have a number of Philly-based SMs posting these days, so I'm trying to get a thread going about people's favorite places in Philly. Here's the link- I hope you have some great places to share!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Ergonomics and the Tech Table

I am so that klutz. I would love this kind of thing, but I don't think I could stomach writing in the performance report, "LQ37 late due to SM falling off treadmill."  :D

Worked in a venue recently where the house electrician had a treadmill desk in the booth. He walked while we teched and during the performance. Never missed a cue, only paused if he had a question for me. Don't think that it's for me but interesting to see someone making it work for them.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: FORMS: Mic Plot help
« on: Jun 18, 2014, 12:31 pm »
In general, when I'm making a new form, I start with what factors are important. In this case:

Actor name (or character name)
Mic pack #
Channel #

Next, I consider what the purpose of the form is. Is it the running paperwork for the sound guy? If so, I'd probably make a running list-style form to have at the board. Is it for the backstage crew and will be posted on the wall for "quick glance" access? If so, I might make something more like a chart, possibly color coded.

Then I work through the show in order, plugging in the information as I learn it. Again, depending on what the purpose of the paperwork is, you can then add or subtract info as needed. (Page #, timestamp, notes column, cue for repatching, etc) Once I've done a first draft, it's easy to change it if I don't like the format.

Alternatively, you can take another form you have that serves a similar purpose, and modify it to fit your needs. (A costume plot could be modified to track body mics).

464
In a column on the runsheet- "ASM cues" or "on blue Q light" or "on Sally: "I'm done!" (or whatever the cue line is).

465
If it were me, I would probably do some kind of chart with columns.

1-2-3-4     K+D do X move     R, E, W do Y move     P+T circle group CCW
5-6-7-8     K+D do X move     R+E do Z move         P engage W USL               T continue circle CCW

Or something like that, breaking it down into smaller "chunks" where each actor is accounted for. If it's possible to videotape, even better, but I still like to have the fight notated in some way.

You might also talk to your fight director about how they notate things, and if you can get a copy of their notes.
