Thank you all for the information. Unfortunately after three interviews I came in 2nd. Again! And the search continues...

I didn't see the opera company listed on the site, but I know for a fact they're union. I'm still searching...

I found out Friday night that I'll be going to my final interview for Operations Manager for the Charlotte Symphony on Monday morning. This is my chance to combine my stage management experience with my office administration experience - and to finally make the move to full-time employment at an arts organization.

During my first interview the Director of Operations seemed most interested in my stage management experience and he had no question that I could handle the administrative side (thanks to a well-worded recommendation from my last director). However, since the Symphony works with the opera as well as musicians, I'm trying to find union rules for running rehearsals and performances for both but I'm having no luck. Anyone know where I can find them? I've looked at their 'official' websites but I haven't found anything.

Thank you! The scouring for opera info has commenced :)

I'm not intentionally trying to make the transition to opera, but at the moment it seems my best chance at full-time employment with any arts organization - I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my 2nd interview.

I have noticed similar differences when working as a PA for VA Opera, especially the strange (to me) habit of calling everyone Ms. or Mr., calling performers for entrances (this really confused me initially, since I thought, shouldn't they know the music well enough to know their entrances?) and just the overall grandeur that goes into every production that typically only has 3-5 performances. I didn't like opera initially and thought it was going to be a long season, but I grew to appreciate it and eventually discovered a few operas I love.

I'm thankful for SM Network, since now I'm scouring everything opera-related so I'm much more prepared for the interview.

The Green Room / Re: Are there any AEA SM moms?
« on: Jul 07, 2010, 08:47 am »
I'm not AEA but I do SM on a regular basis and I'll be the first to tell you it is very hard and takes a lot of juggling from yourself and anyone willing to help you. I have one 2 year old and a husband who works in a field that requires odd and unpredictable hours; right now he's at the age where I can't take him to rehearsals and keep him busy with crayons and a coloring book, so I've had to scale back on the amount of work I can take on outside the usual 9-5. Sitters can be expensive and I can't rely on family to watch him nightly on a regular basis.

But believe me, when he gets old enough he'll be coming with me and he'll learn rehearsal etiquette very quickly! And from my own childhood I've learned kids can sleep anywhere :) If anything he'll have an appreciation for theatre and for my contribution to a production.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Paperless World

I'm not 100% sure it could handle all of your needs, but Google Sites was very helpful in cutting down printed paperwork for me, and since it's Google you can integrate Calendar into it (I didn't try integrating Docs but I don't see why it wouldn't work). Designers uploaded their plans and lists, stage management did the same, and the actors had their own section for line notes, scripts, etc. You could make a separate site per production, or organize the pages somehow for each type of paperwork (page for scenic plots, page for light plots, etc.). If you would like to take a tour of the site we made for A Streetcar Named Desire PM me and I'll send you an invite...same for anyone else :)
We also made a virtual callboard for actors on the site, but we still kept a paper callboard as backup.

Please explain the WWW...it's who what where/when? I've never seen that done for a musical or straight play. Why is it important?

Stage Management: Other / Possible interview ?s for opera ASM
« on: Jul 02, 2010, 09:34 am »
I'm expecting a call within a few weeks for an interview with an opera company as an ASM. I've worked on operas as a PA but not in stage management. What questions should I expect during the interview? What will they most likely be looking for in an opera ASM that would be different from the usual ASM?

My favorite job title from the list of credits "Queen of Talent".

I noticed that too! Wonder what kind of credentials you need to get that title... :)

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Saving Old Scripts

I've always offered the book to the theatre, even if it isn't their policy, and while it's something they haven't thought about they almost always take it.

Did you see the massive list of stage managers? That's a clue as to just how much is going on backstage...

Maybe if they tried paring things down, go for a more simple format, they could concentrate on improving the sound (which was an improvement over last year...which still isn't saying much...)

Oh Matt, the call script in the Jello brought me physical pain! But the balloon filled office was nice.
