The Hardline / Re: AEA supporting IATSE?

How is it possible to honor the picket line yet sign in for work?

because the deputies, stage managers and Equity business reps are standing outside in the lines.

Employment / Re: full time or part time?
« on: Oct 24, 2007, 03:09 pm »
I am proud to say that Stage Management has been the only job I have had since college.

It's doable.  Its not easy and its not always fun but you can do it.

The Hardline / Re: COST Contract questions
« on: Oct 19, 2007, 02:57 pm »
I have worked four COST contracts at two different theatres and I am currently being housed on one.  I am not being charged for my housing.

Feel free to PM me if you have other questions.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Being "Written Up"
« on: Oct 14, 2007, 03:15 am »
Its been documented.  The pushed actor filed an accident report that described the incident and it was in the performance report.  Not to mention the deputy and dance captain witnessed the incident and gave thier statements.

The mediation is just about the last two weeks of this part of the run not being a nightmare for everyone involved... not even about the inciting incident.

Employment / Re: Internships
« on: Oct 14, 2007, 02:43 am »
The answer is... it depends...

Multiple internships- a lot depends on which theatres they are.  You want to make sure that multiple internships don’t become lateral moves.  If you are doing more than one, make sure each one is better than the one before whether its because it is at a bigger larger regional theatre that is well known or because you get to PSM the children’s show while working on the main stage or you'll be working with a stage manager with some knowledge and connections that you can benefit from.

Definitions are all different.  What I did as an apprentice at Round House Theatre is the same thing that Dramachic did as an intern at Olney Theatre Center.  I believe that the exact same job is a fellowship at Arena Stage.  Round House's interns are non-paid HS kids and at Olney the apprentice works with the education department.  No matter what it is called, check out the job requirements and the pay/stipend/benefits.  Luckily most theatre employers understand and will ask if there is any question as to what your duties were as a fellow/intern/apprentice.

Uploaded Forms / Re: Line Notes (for going "off book")

I think I dont really have a line note form I like because I hate line notes so very much!!

Luckily I have always had assistants who LOVE THEM!

The Hardline / Re: Equity "half-hour"
« on: Oct 14, 2007, 02:22 am »
I also like to touch base with everyone in person but when you have 10 or so dressing rooms on three or more floors... you start with half hour and by the time you get to the last one it's five!!

I like to page half hour and then roam the halls and check in with everyone.  Luckily I have enough assistants to cover making the rest of the calls if I am not in the office or backstage at the calling console.

Its also nice where I am currently because the office is right by the stage door and callboard so most people check in with me when they come in because I am right there.

Alright...

In your professional experience (because obviously it is different in college and community theatres), have you ever "written up" an actor?  If so, what did you write them up in??  The rehearsal/performance report??  SM weekly report??

I had an incident this week with an actor pushing another actor during a put in rehearsal.  I did not witness the event but several actors told me that she should be written up.  I guess I am just lucky that I have never really had a reason to write up an actor...  I have had outstanding casts over the years.

(PS.  The situation is on its way to being resolved through mediation with no need of writing up, down, across or diagonal :) )

Here is a discussion I have never seen on here.

In your performance reports, do you document when you messed up a cue wrong?

Obviously this is after previews and openings are over with as we are always still learning the call.  But sometimes in the run something happens and the cue is called late or early.

I was always told that you SHOULD put this in your report.  Mostly for integrity but also that way if a producer, designer or someone sees the show that night and the bump at the end of "Make 'em Laugh" is late they know that you knew it was late and that’s not how you always call it.

I also wonder about being too quick to blame crew and board ops when they are late with the cue after you have called it right.  I really think that unless I am calling a perfect show I have no place to point out the mistakes of others.

Thoughts??  Discuss!

I had 745 total cues in One Red Flower.  That included LX, Sound, Projections, Deck and Pyro.

It was so much fun!!

The Hardline / Re: Deputy
« on: Sep 11, 2007, 04:23 pm »
You really should have two deputies.  I know it sound funny to have a deputy on a pink contract when there are only two actors on chorus contracts.

I believe it pays off in the long run.

I'm with Scoot.  Always on deck if possible.  I mostly do very large complex musicals and ALWAYS prefer the deck.
