Hi Katie,

Welcome, I am also from Virginia. Let me know if you have questions about schools in Virginia I visited all of them and can give advice on the programs from experience  and friends. Or just let me know if you have any other questions too, but make sure to explore the boards, there's a whole lotta knowledge here.

The Hardline / Re: Non-AEA PA pay for tech?

Nope not when paid weekly, for hourly companies obviously yes, depending on the environment my only suggestion would be to negotiate it into the contract...

The Green Room / Housing for National Tours
« on: Dec 10, 2013, 07:53 am »
I have some housing opportunities in large metropolitan areas that are frequented by National tours. I was thinking it would not only be helpful to me and my business but to the company members of such tours to offer my housing as an alternative. I know frequently on longer stops company members will rent apartments or choose an alternative to the hotel especially when they can save money. Does anyone have an idea of how I could make this information available? I figured talking to the CM would be best since they are in charge of that information  but there contact is  rarely readily available in advance. I was thinking first figuring out who is producing company or GM and start from there letting them know what I have available?  Anyone have more advice on this? I think it would be great for someone involved in Theatre and who understands the nature of the gig to be providing housing especially at discounted rates. Also let me know if what I am thinking is completely ridiculous. Thanks!

I would just take notes of things that you need to know, and make sure people hit everything they needed to talk about otherwise I just let them sort it out.

Same theatre, new actors, same problem. A veteran broadway actor tried to discuss this with me, but not being in the union I refused to contribute and told him to talk to his deputy.

Wonder how this went...

This sort of sounds like the opposite of what I would want on SM day, except for the cake, that I would like. I would much prefer a day when no one bothered me and I was able to nap during the show.

Keep in mind new spike tape and weeks old spike tape produce very different results...

Hello from a fellow Virginian!

So, if an actor/director/designer takes photos without "notification," is the producing organization responsible if any claims are made, being that they did not comply with their end of the contract?  Just a hypothetical....

The company i'm working for now, is just coming out from dealing with an intern posting an "innocent" video on facebook, a few musicians found out contacted the union, and finally a year later they have proven that since the company was unaware and asked that it be immediately removed when they did find out they were not liable, but it could have gone either way...

One thing we have done on this show, is posted on the callboard, that no pictures or videos should be taken or posted from rehearsal. Our deputy is very good and very serious so he has helped enforce that. The director didn't allow cellphone use  in rehearsal so that helped. Also our marketing department set up time to take "candid" pictures in rehearsal and then post them on the facebook page and that allows us to share them, due to the new LORT rules.

I think costume photos being taken is the least enforced, I try to remind people all the time but it's nearly impossible, it's obvious when people are on stage trying to take photos of the set, or backstage taking photos of the show, but costume photos can be taken everywhere and I feel like people are more relaxed about that rule.

Introductions / Re: Any other Brits around?
« on: Jul 28, 2013, 12:57 am »
Hi Kate!

Welcome to the boards! I am half Brit, as in my partner is and we spend  a lot of the year in Windsor (cough cough: all my unemployed time). I haven't yet started working there for all kinds of visa and tax reasons but maybe in the future I will.

I hope you find lots of useful information here!

I worry more about stage managers physical health than mental, but both are something we have to struggle with.

Our team just dealt with this the other day...waiting for actors who, even though we have announced multiple times before tech and during to get into costume ASAP  and come onstage when ready, they wait aroun,d chat, get dressed in the last two minutes and then cry foul! But honestly this was a two day tech which meant the faster they worked the faster they had a chance to run the show before the only dress rehearsal, even that didn't motivate them...Luckily we ended up always having something useful to do with the actors who did actually get dressed quickly so it didn't feel like wasted time.

I have (well had) special circumstances that made my relationship work pretty well for the first three years now going into year 4 things have gotten complicated. Mostly with my fiancee being deported and all. Before when he would travel with me cause he could do his job from anywhere and travel to places he needed to go for business meetings, etc. Now he can only stay a certain amount of time in the states and if that lines up with busy work times then we're screwed, like his recent trip where I was closing one show and starting prepro for another with no break. Plus I'm never working where our homes are so I always have to negotiate housing him when he is able to come. But right now I am holding down the fort while he is thousands of miles and a five hour time difference away, which really sucks when you are on a rehearsal schedule and literally are never able to talk at the same time. But we have learned to cope (luckily the beginning of the relationship was long distance so we are used to it) We send messages, long emails, sometimes I stay up late or he gets up extra early. Luckily he has really come to understand the commitment of this career.  I am also not trying to schedule any gigs for the next month so that we can spend enough time together that he will be sick of me again. I guess I am bad because I have never chosen my job over him but so far it has been win/win.

I have not tried this nor do I know the logistics, but I know someone who laid out yarn once. I just imagined the tripping hazard but apparently it worked.
