Congrats!

Velcro- noisy.

Headsets- quiet.

See? I told you! Binder is like the San Antonio Spurs: fundamentally so ery sound, but one of the least exciting teams in the league.

Their big superstar is nicknamed "The Big Fundamental." That's about as sexy as binders are: big yet fundamental.

I guess it's telling that I'm also a Spurs fan, then. :)

But it keeps coming back for more. Sharpen, sharpen, sharpen. I can't imagine doing this job without a pencil.

Agreed. My money's on pencil right now.

Younger SMs will not remember having to use a stopwatch to count down a manual 15 second cross-fade on a two-scene preset board

I don't know....some of the smaller/cheaper theaters around here still have manual two-scene preset boards....

I've used one once! It was actually kind of fun, though I'd take the digital lightboard in a heartbeat.

(An older SM I know told me running a two-scene preset "is like waterskiing with a head full of gin.")

Multitool! This is a no-brainer.

Employment / Re: What (not?) to wear
« on: Nov 30, 2012, 01:06 pm »
Resurrecting this thread: I caught a rerun of an episode of What Not to Wear that featured the production manager at La Jolla Playhouse.

http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/what-not-to-wear/pretty-not-provocative-makeover.htm

They focused on a wardrobe that was pulled together but could still go "from moving a couch with the stagehands to meeting a donor in the lobby." I think they had some great tips (though I don't agree with the amount of open-toed shoes :)).

It's season 8, episode 7 for those who'd want to look it up on Netflix or somewhere online.

Two unrelated requests to the Grand Poo-Bah of the URSTC:

1- Please make all of the folding tables & event chairs stable and easy to store, transport, and stack, and most importantly, LIGHT WEIGHT.

Not to mention level.

The Green Room / What are you thankful for?
« on: Nov 21, 2012, 10:39 pm »
Obviously this is Thanksgiving-inspired, but hopefully international folk will chime in too.

Personally, I'm thankful for working with great people, some really exciting contracts coming up, gaining health insurance, my long-distance relationship no longer being long distance, and my family and siblings cleaning my apartment and doing some decorating/organizing while I've been at work!

That reminds me, did anything ever come of that book club for the Nicholas Bracewell novels?

Sadly, the first post for book 1 didn't generate any discussion, so I didn't post for book 2. I would love to revive it if people are interested though!

The Green Room / Re: When the phone DOES ring...
« on: Nov 14, 2012, 12:01 am »
I don't take my phone to the gym. This gives me an hour or so to de-stress and not take phone calls and emails. Plus, if it's something pressing, the wait isn't too long. Knock wood, this hasn't been a problem in the last year I started doing this.

At TheatreworksUSA we create number lines for tour using the Poly Pro Webbing from Rosebrand, 2" thickness in black.  We mark it every two feet with a piece of white gaff tape with the number on it.  Quick and easy and definitely helps on the road when you are in a new space every day.

This is what I've used too. The SM I learned it from was from Theaterworks!

We had a 10-person matinee recently (the Sunday before Sandy), and we debated cancelling. However, they were very enthusiastic and appreciative!
