Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Community Theater
« on: Apr 01, 2009, 05:02 pm »
My primary stage management experience comes DIRECTLY from community theater. I live in Grand Rapids, MI and we have one of the best technical theater communities in the country as well as one of the top 5 community theatres.  They have resident PMs and Volunteer Coordinators, so to be considered to work, we'd have to contact those people.

Keep in mind, theatres may  not hire you until they know you.  So do not be surprised if they require you to work crew or ASM first.  Build that trust with the theatre and show them you are a hard worker and then...climb that ladder! :)

That's interesting. When I tried to apply to their graduate SM program, I was told they no longer had that program... I wish I could help you.

Are you admitted for undergrad or grad?

Ah, almost forgot.

Regarding how to answer these questions: I simply called the schools' registrar's department.

Although I don't recall which schools had which answers, some said "the university requires it for demographic records but it won't affect admission", some applications did have the "Other" field to specify, one school's application did have in small print that it was important to get students of all races or something like that (I want to say that was Yale but I could be TOTALLY mistaken on that one), and some applications had enough options to where it wasn't an issue.

So, basically. I just asked and answered as best I could.

Though I didn't personally apply or visit UCI, I have actually heard this criticism before.

Any UCI grad students out there who want to elaborate? Perhaps this isn't the perception you want from prospective students....?

Let him do the work?

What's the benefit of that? If he is going to be a director, he needs to learn to let others do their jobs as stage managers and learn to separate himself from director versus stage manager.

I agree with TomorrowToday in terms of sitting down and writing out the duties, BECAUSE it is easy to fall into old habits.

Good luck...

I agree.  I was told I needed to let them know sooner rather than later. But I have to wait to hear from other schools. I'm in crunch right now...I don't want to lose my spot but I don't want to be pressured to say yes just  yet. It's a strange place for me to be in right now.........

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Rutgers - facilities?
« on: Mar 18, 2009, 09:24 am »
Hello!

I couldn't find a topic that discussed this, so pardon me if this might be repeat information... but I was accepted to Rutgers for this fall. I have yet to OFFICIALLY accept, and have to let them know soon. All in all, very excited!

Surprisingly, I was accepted without being required to visit the campus.  Although what I know of the reputation of the program as well as the success of the students speak highly for the program, can anyone who has attended/taught there provide some insight on the facilities, since I may not be able to visit before I give them my attendance confirmation?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Conquering Spam Filters

jempage, yahoo tried something like this and I didn't like its format. Gmail might be better though. Thank you for sharing. I will certainly try this.

Gmail is my numero uno choice right now, too.  I still keep my yahoo account active, as it's nice to have 2 accounts I check daily. Many of my previous employers know this account and it still has a lot of documents from old shows in it.  Gmail has not added a Folders feature that wasn't there before.  So we can label, star, and put things in folders (or what appears to be folders....maybe more advanced labeling? I don't know. But it works quite nicely).  I am a happy little stage management camper with that!

I think my issue with Yahoo is that it automatically deleted my spam. I think I set it up to do this, though.  I am with kmc, though. I scan my spam box to see if there is anything aside from the usual random spam messages, and so far, have yet to find important email filtered there.

For me:
Yahoo suddenly starting blocking certain formatted student email accounts.  The emails were not added to my "block list" or in my spam folder.  It was entirely a mystery!

When things HAVE gone into my spam folder and I've noticed, in gmail and yahoo, I believe, you can mark the message "not spam" or something similar.  Make sure, when things have gone into the spam folder too, to remove any email address automatically added to a block email list by the email provider.

I find with gmail, simply moving things back to inbox will do it. Important emails get caught there sometimes... sometimes, these "convenient features" of technology aren't so convenient....

I don't know how to combat the Spam Folder any better really.

I have had yahoo issues rather recently, and have since used my gmail account. The last show I did was for a university and my cast of students all got my emails just fine...but I never got ANY of theirs'.  Not sure what the glitch was. So yes, there are definitely pros and cons. I agree.  We should open a topic (elsewhere) about what email providers have worked and such. It would be interesting discuss how email is used (in terms of organizing folders, labels, inbox, etc) and what glitches we've come across.

Another thread, another time.

I do agree though. But in the event that it's not a spam filter issue.....?

Agreed with Jessie.  The phone call is a great FOLLOW UP, for me, but not always initial contact.  I want it all written down in specifics so I can refer to it again.  Sometimes, I take calls on the road or out and about, so it's not always ideal.

Being a stage manager who uses email as one of her primary sources of communication, I also find it hard to believe that anyone is too busy to shoot back a quick email in response.  Particularly if one has applied for a job and is waiting to hear from a prospective employer.  To me, there is nothing more frustrating than someone who is unreachable.

Am I the only one that thinks freelance stage managers who are working might actually NOT have time to check their emails for several days?
Also a surprising number of emails do go missing or get swallowed by spam filters.

I've been on this hiring end, but not for stage management. This is frustrating.  You aren't missing anything, as far as I can see.  It's common courtesy as well as common sense, if you ask me, to simply response.  One never knows when one will come across this employer again in the future....
