Employment / Re: Showcase and Managers...

Thank you for your suggestions!  I am working on a list of people to send things to.  Anyone need a stage manager?

I have almost always ran my production meetings.  Occasionally I've had a production manager run them, but most places I have been, there wasn't a production manager and the TD was very focused on the build and not the overall production.  I always go though my rehearsal reports before the production meeting so I know everything will be covered that needs to be.  I also like to start with the director or anyone who really wants to talk first.

Hope this helps.

Employment / Showcase and Managers...
« on: Nov 28, 2006, 11:06 am »
Hello Everyone---

I'm not sure which forum this should go in, so moderators please feel free to move this as needed.  I am currently in the third year of an MFA program getting ready to graduate.  I have 5 actors graduating with me as well as 2 theatre managers.  We are currently putting together a showcase to take to the New York and Philly area as well as Chicago.  My question for the group is how do I as a stage manager get my foot in the door for interviews and things like that when in the city for a limited amount of time.  We will be doing a showcase, is there a way to get people there that I can talk to?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Employment / Re: summer jobs.

I worked at Illinois Shakespeare Festival last summer and it was great.  They hire SM and ASM and have interns as well.  It was a fantastic learning experience and I made  a little money as well. Check out their website, thefestival.org I think.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Grad School vs Experience

I am finishing my third and final year in grad school and I am a fan of it.  I  am in a program that pays me and I get a degree.  I've been interviewed because of the school and then hired.  For me grad school was the right choice, otherwise I might still be waitressing and stage managing at the community theatre.  It also gives me more options later.  If I decide to go into teaching I can.

I am currently a graduate student at the Hilberry Theatre (Wayne State University) and Amy Dolan came in last year and gave her power point presentation.  All of the stage management students were there, but only about 40% of the acting students attended.  The fault doesn't just lie in the universities, but in the people who need the knowledge, or don't realize that they will need the knowledge.

I went to Drake University in Des Moines, IA.  I got  a BFA in technical theatre and was able to focus on stage management.  I would highly reccomend it.  It gave me a well rounded background in technical theatre with chances to design, as well as teaching about acting and directing as well.
