I'm glad you have had the opportunity to gather your thoughts and vent your feelings. Besides being a wealth of information, this site is a wonderful place to share experiences, both good and bad.

It seems you are in a situation that has gotten seriously out of hand. Have you had a conversation with the Producer/Employer/Technical Director/Director/Founder as to the specifics of your concerns? Before you take it to the Union, I suggest you try and resolve the issues in a nice, polite conversation stressing that there seems to be some kind of misunderstanding and you would love to clear it up before it goes any further. Depending on the outcome of your conversation you can either make a call to the Union to see if there are any other options, chalk it up to experience, or leave the production.

Welcome to the Union. All Producers are NOT like this and I applaud your morals, convictions and fortitude and would welcome a personal message should the need arise. We all wish you the best...

The Hardline / Re: 'showcase favored nations'
« on: Jun 29, 2007, 07:32 pm »
Is it possible you are speaking about 2 separate topics?

There is a Showcase Code in AEA's Document Library
http://www.actorsequity.org/docs/codes/Basic_Showcase_06.pdf

And I have always understood "Favored Nations" to be a negotiating clause meaning everyone receives the same deal as everyone else. You can specify salary only or be more specific and include billing, cars, dressing rooms, mileage allowance, etc...

My two cents ~

I thought the EMC program was to get experience in your chosen field.  Marcie's plan gave her experience in the acting arena and the points she accrued as an actor are not divided between acting and stage management so they do count towards her Stage Management interest.  The theatre either has understudies in name only and lose out should the situation arise or they use her as an undocumented SM PA... It's an interesting way to beat the system...

IMHO

Congrats in being behind the Orange curtain and having no trouble finding LORT work.
I work at Laguna Playhouse quite a lot. And you?

Going for your card at 21?  Bold.  Good luck.

Well as far as the card is concerned someone was talking about getting EMC points and they said it takes 2 steady years of work to get it and you can wait for up to 5 years after that so... do I think I'll be ready for my card when I'm 28 problably.  Besides there are always SPT's needing good stage managers.

It's my understanding that it takes 50 points (weeks) to qualify for your card. I guess the time frame depends on the amount of work you get. Don't SPT contracts require Equity Stage Managers? They don't always require Equity ASM's but if an ASM is not required/hired, I don't believe you can acrue EMC points for serving as a non-Equity ASM. Just my opinion...

It is also an opportunity for the local Business Field Rep to speak with the cast about everything Equity. I'm sure all the Reps have their own script but they all have similar topics: Direct Deposit, Deputy, Committee opportunities, Health plan, Childcare services, Equity discounts, state of the Union to name a few. It is also a great time for the cast to get to know one another and begin the bonding...

Many AEA contracts have a clause entitling a producer to make an archival videotape.
All of them have strict rules and regulations about the taping and forms that must be filled out.
The cast must also vote to approve the archival taping.

Please remember that not all contracts allow taping.

Permission must always be asked of the Union before any archival taping can occur.

The Hardline / Re: Who can I stage manage for?
« on: Mar 04, 2007, 11:40 am »
Equity PA's on Broadway has been discussed before. As long as you are not doing stage management work, it seems to be allowed. The line comes into question when you start doing SM work as opposed to PA work. What is the difference, you ask? Ahh, therein lies the rub...

Ask the PSM's on Broadway their opinion about the issue.
I'd love to hear their opinions.

Absolutely. And actors will most always come in early and be thankful for the consideration.
If not, remind them!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Paying for parking
« on: Jan 26, 2007, 12:17 pm »
It does seem odd that they would expect you to lose money in order to work on the show. You mentioned that Stage Management is working on the issue, so I would quietly and calmly let them know of your concerns and your inability to lose money on the venture and see what they can arrange. No one likes to pay for parking but not all Equity contracts provide for it... It is sometimes a fact of life.

Let us know what happens.

Best,
Vernon
