The Green Room / "Google plans to drop Wave" - CNN
« on: Aug 05, 2010, 01:11 pm »
For those that wanted more information:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/web/08/04/google.wave.end/index.html?hpt=Sbin

"Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked," Urs Hölzle, a Google senior vice president, writes on the company's official blog.

"We don't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects."

The post does not say how many people signed up for or used Google Wave.

Yeah, that's right . . . always trying to impress the chicks.  (Ssssh)

No, no, I am fine with being Seasoned or Old . . . I guess.

Sigh.

Very convincing.

Synonyms for the word 'seasoned', broken down into two categories: good and bad.

GOOD:
accomplished
adept
battle-scarred (scars are cool and chicks dig them, right?)
competent
expert
familiar
knowledgeable
matured (pretty sure not the same as old)
practiced
prepared
pro/professional
qualified
skillful
tested
tried
wise (beyond your young years!)
worldly/worldly wise

BAD:
been around (only for it's physical implication)
hardened
old hand (because of aforementioned distaste of 'old')
toughened
trained (just makes you sound like a poodle or seal)
vet and/or veteran (again, 'old')
weathered (like a house in Maine? no thanks)

Hope this helps Matt  ;D

I might be missing something, but I've never thought of not being able to watch 100% of the show as a problem persay.  Isn't it a given that you won't see all of the production? There are simply some sequences I'm going to miss because of business offstage or difficult sequences onstage.

The Green Room / Re: Why is it that...

Why is it that actors think they can direct just because they act? or producers think they can act? or actors who have no talent continue to act?

I also got Netflix instead of cable, which means I'm watching a bunch of older shows. Skins and Pushing Daisies are recent finds, and if I feel like watching shows about theater, Slings and Arrows. (Favorite recent quote: "Can you stop being a stage manager for FIVE MINUTES?!" "I CAAAAAAN'T!")

I also caught Slings and Arrows. I thought the stage manager's drunken rant to the actors was on the money :)

We've been using Netflix's online services lately, and I'm sad to say that I've been slowly working my way through all seasons of South Park. When you just want to tune out, that does the job!

Currently on TV: Hell's Kitchen, Master Chef, Modern Family, The Middle and Cougar Town. Oh, and Glee when it's a good episode.

Tools of the Trade / Re: OneNote
« on: Jul 28, 2010, 11:33 am »
I toyed with the idea of using it for blocking and to call a show, but in the end I decided against it. I am really detailed when it comes to the formatting of my scripts and OneNote is too basic in this regards. I did like that I could add notes on the sides for blocking or cues, but it was very time consuming. Hope this helps.

I learned today that I shouldn't judge so harshly when I hear a news story that a teacher duct-taped a kids mouth shut. Today I related to her, X's 13 kids!

When I shadowed for "Wicked" I asked to see her book - because I was curious as well for the same reason - and she had a regular script with the lyrics, one line each, and if there was a cue at the end of a lyric or between lyrics, she had "1 2 3 GO" or "1 2 GO" wherever the cue went after the line. She watched each musical numbers, keeping the beat, and she would call the cues that way. It was very basic but very easy to follow.

I hope that gibberish made sense!

The Green Room / Re: Being friends with other stage managers

Marriage to another person in the arts...someone needs to start that thread because I wonder what I missed by purposefully marrying someone with absolutely no interest in the arts  ;D

I've been in this city for nearly 10 years and I've just recently met a fellow stage manager. We're always working at other venues in different parts of town during the same hours. The only reason I met her was because I saw a show during some down-time. We knew each other by name and reputation (she stage managed the last production in the theatre I was currently working in and vice versa) but never met until then. I don't think I've met the other stage managers here, but I know them all by name and what shows they've worked.

The Green Room / Re: Best one-liner from a performance report
« on: Jul 18, 2010, 12:10 pm »
A long note . . . but from tonight's report . . .

Quote
Standing Ovation and screams of delight – it was like a Hannah Montana concert audience out there at curtain call (or what I imagine a Hannah Montana audience to be like – I just want it to be known – I have never been to a Hannah Montana concert in my life – I have watched the TV show on occasion, but really only to see what all the hubbub is about.  I did, though, once have lunch at a restaurant across the street from a concert venue right after a Hannah Montana concert – so I think I have a pretty good idea what the audience would be like.  Truth be known, I have never been to a non-classical music concert in my life. Truly.  And there, my friends, is a little insight into my life.)

That might be a tad excessive...but very humorous!
