I need a minute to think abt this one. Both are vital tools in my kit. I don't want to be without either of them!

The feed from under is what's planned. That's the problem. The prop mistress wants to build a carpetbag that holds up (and holds small stuff) during the parts of the play when it is NOT being opened and stuff pulled thru, then easily opens for things to be fed through, then relatched to hide the gag.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / PROPS: Bottomless bag
« on: Dec 07, 2012, 07:12 pm »
We are doing Around the World in 80 Days and need a bottomless carpetbag similar to the bottomless carpetbag gag in Mary Poppins. Has anyone done this? Are there any suggestions to help our prop mistress?

Thank you all!

no argument here. Protractor only useful sometimes, while the tape measure is useful ALWAYS.

The thing about a digital lightboard - they are wonderful inventions, and have really made a huge difference in many facets of our work, but in fact, the digital lightboard is a tool for lighting designers and board ops but not really for stage managers. Which is why I vote for the pencil!

Younger SMs will not remember having to use a stopwatch to count down a manual 15 second cross-fade on a two-scene preset board

I don't know....some of the smaller/cheaper theaters around here still have manual two-scene preset boards....

No performer will wear flip flops ever or go barefoot in any area than the stage unless it has recently been swept and mopped.

Amusingly, I just did a juke-box musical where the director and choreo, both well-established with many years of credits, were astonished, I tell you, astonished to work for the first time with an SM who read music and could talk to the MD and musicians in their language, able to easily and clearly let everyone know where we were picking up from or helping as a set of ears (just as I sometimes am eyes for the dance or fight captain, letting them know when things need to be fixed because their eyes and ears are busy elsewhere). That said, of all the shows I've observed, only two have used a score rather than the libretto t call the show. And the only guaranteed scores have been the handful of operas.

It's been flirting with LinkedIn, Facebook and who knows who else. But it's only 13, it's too young to settle down!

(if it's the 13th anniversary, shouldn't we have a bat mitzvah?)

You can also prime the pot a bit if you know areas of interest where talent and passion lie. If you know the other arenas of interest, you can focus conversation on how good he is at these and how wonderful it is to see him considering jumping into other things, encouraging him to try those alternatives, etc. A brief experience: I have a friend who only wanted to act - and was TERRIBLE. But she is a great photographer. Every time we got together I took the opportunity to admire her pics, suggest her for theater PR shots, etc etc. I actually helped her find work as a theater photog on several occasions. Over time, she found more and more work as a photog - and interestingly, also became a better actor - and while she now dabbles in theater, she makes her living doing graphic work.

(And, as an aside - GRRRR that people who hate it are taking those touring gigs and many who would love them can't get in the door.)

Just got back from a huge awards ceremony so sorry, didn't look this up - but I remember this discussion a few years ago, but with a turkey, I think - did you try a search on this site?
