I am not sure teaching needs to / should fall on a traditional SM resume . . .maybe under special skills, if you still hold onto that section in your resume.

I would agree with this from a skills perspective, but if you leave the teaching experience off, how do you explain a 1-2 year (or longer) gap on your resume?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Useful iPhone apps?
« on: Dec 13, 2012, 01:49 pm »
In case anyone has been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, Google has released a Google Maps App for iPhone, available in the app store

Apple Maps can now join its bretheren of useless, undeletable apps (Compass, Voice Memos, Weather, Game Center) in my folder labeled "Apple Garbage".

For a few years I had a hybrid theatrical and "standard business" resume.

I had the business experience listed under "Continuous Professional Employment" and the show-specific experience listed under "Related Theatrical Experience".  I was also applying for non-theatrical work at this time, so the resume was geared more towards business, but perhaps a hybrid of this nature would be good for your education-related work?

I am going for the scale rule based on the fact that gel is a consumable.  You have to replace them every couple of months, there is no staying power.  I've had the same scale rule for almost 10 years!

The Green Room / 2012 Holiday Gift Guide
« on: Dec 10, 2012, 10:24 am »
Hard to believe we are already a couple of days into Chanukah, and Christmas is right around the corner.  If you're like me, you're always struggling what to get some people for as a gift.  Thankfully, this holiday gift guide will solve all of your problems - and perhaps create a few new ones in the process :o

A closing of an interesting nature I read about this morning in the Miami Herald.  The Mosaic Theatre is closing, however it would seem the closure is not for financial reasons, but rather that the founder has decided to leave.  The Board of Directors is opting to close rather than find a replacement.  The founder's decision to leave for "quality of life" is interesting - I wonder how many pros have gone on to other disciplines for similar reasons.

Quote
“More than anything, I wanted this theater to continue after I’m gone,” said Simon, who launched the company in 2001 with a production of Nicholas Kazan’s Blood Moon. “But over the past year, without anyone knowing why, I’ve talked to artistic directors about working 42 out of 52 weekends every year. It really came down to quality of life. Ninety-five percent said that after they had children, they wish they’d done things differently.”

Does the space have a grid?  Could you dead hang a trapeze? If you can dead hang it, perhaps you can add a block and hand line off stage to hide the trapeze when not in use.

Has anyone found a subsitute for maps since upgrading to OS6?  Someone recommended an app to me called "Waze" which is free and has a lot of good information on it.  It seems like a decent app however after trying this out I realized it's a massive battery suck, so I'm back in the market.

Any suggestions?

I can use a pencil to hold my hair in a bun - try doing that with a wrench!

I dunno, I can see the c-wrench hair bun becoming a new fad.  You should start it, you'll only get a few odd looks  :o

How can this even be a contest? Gaff tape is THE tool.

Well, it is a first round matchup.  The road will get harder for the GAFF assuming it pulls out a victory in this round  ;)

Employment / Re: Phone interview for opera company

Coincidentally, right after I read this thread I found this article posted on LinkedIn.  It may be helpful and includes some interesting tips I hadn't considered previously.

Top 10 tips for a succesful telephone interview

Point 3 expands on Jessie's point below that your actions and mood will come across in your voice:

3) Sit in front of the mirror.

This may seem a little odd but quite simply it will give you an indication of how you are coming across. Do you look animated? Is your head up? Perhaps most importantly are you smiling? If not then try to focus on doing so, this may translate in you feeling more confident and therefore sounding more positive!  Alternatively you could try standing up and walking around. If you are more comfortable walking and talking then ensure you are in the right environment to do this. Many people feel they are more animated when upright and this allows for a greater level of focus.

(I'll also confess that, when I'm reading applications and hiring, I'd much rather see yourname@yourdomain.com, rather than yourname_4412b$%^#x@gmail.com or--even worse--sexylips4412@theatreschool.edu.)

My assistant's email address is "sexyvixen83@something.com".  *headdesk*.  Worst of it is she does fantastic work, not a great email address should she need to look for a job in the future, though.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Do you prefer Word or Excel?
« on: Nov 08, 2012, 08:10 am »
Matthew - in addition to your points, Access is also a lot more labor intensive.  If you need to manage 15,000 database records - absolutely Access is the right choice.  For all paperwork I can think of SM-related, Excel and/or Word would be much more effective than Access.  Of course it boils down to personal preference, but why spend more time than is necessary on paperwork?

Do you need the whipped cream for part of the show?  We use real, bonafide CO2 extinguishers in our show.  No harm to people, and leaves no film (unless you spray someone very close up).  You can get them refilled by tons of companies across the US for $50-$100 depending on where you are.

Caution on this one if you are in enclosed areas or need to have an effect of spraying someone direct (as you've mentioned).  The more CO2 there is, the less O, and less O is a bad thing - unless you're a plant!

70 degrees, sunny and not a cloud in the sky here in Miami.  I do find it humorously ironic that having lived in Miami for six years now, my friends in NYC will have been through more hurricanes than I have.

Stay safe all in the Northeast, and hope you have plenty of supplies (and booze) on hand to weather the storm.
