Is it a resident production or a touring production? If it's resident, and a single production, check out rule 74. REHEARSAL. (D) Single Production: Rehearsal Hours After the First Public Performance. If it's touring, I think it would be 62.I.

December Madness 2 / Re: SOFTWARE: Word vs Web Browser
« on: Dec 02, 2014, 10:22 am »
Ah, but I think Google Drive is less "print-friendly" than Word....It's great for sharing things like meeting notes, but less helpful for something with particular formatting.

Plus, Word works even if you don't have internet!

December Madness 2 / Re: APPS: Dropbox vs Text Messaging
« on: Dec 01, 2014, 11:50 am »
Dropbox is probably the underdog in this match but I'm totally rooting for it! To able to instantly share all of my documents with my ASMs, or the design team, or download updated score pages to print without having to deal with thumb drives is the GREATEST!

December Madness 2 / SOCIAL, Round 1: Facebook vs Yelp
« on: Dec 01, 2014, 12:08 am »
To network with your friends and colleagues in the theatre community? Or to find the best coffee shop in the city where your tour has stopped? This, my friends, is the conundrum of the Facebook vs. Yelp first round matchup, the first in the Social Division.

On Team Facebook, you have a quick and easy way to invite friends to Invited Dress, find your next SM job, and share production photos from your latest and greatest show! On Team Yelp, you can find the best place to grab breakfast around the corner from the theatre (and note which bagel shop to avoid). A tough matchup, to be sure.

Make your selection and tell us which social media tool has your vote.

Polls will be open until midnight EST, December 3.

December Madness 2 / WEBSITE, Round 1: Webmail vs. AEA Docs
« on: Dec 01, 2014, 12:06 am »
In this digital, wifi-connected age, websites are a favorite division in this year's December Madness competition! Much debate about the matchup between longtime favorite Webmail (featuring team members as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and AOL, among others) and rival AEA Docs, which provides easy access to AEA agreements, stage management packets, and other helpful forms and reference material. Webmail's accessibility on mobile platforms like smart phones give it a decided edge in this match, but don't underestimate AEA Docs- it has the utility and functionality to go far!

Cast your vote here! And tell the world why that site has your vote.

Polls will be open until midnight EST, December 3.

Employment / Re: Sending cold resumes
« on: Nov 30, 2014, 06:51 pm »
Once you get to know your market, send your resumes during the "season" when theatres in your area do their hiring. In my area, that's usually around the same time that they announce their season (Jan-Mar).

When I do a mass mailing of resumes, I usually make a list of all the places that I would really want to work. Then, I try and do 3 or 4 a day until I get through the list. That way it doesn't become a totally unmanageable project.

I recommend keeping some kind of record of your communication with these companies. I have a spreadsheet- I keep track of when I sent a resume, who I sent it to, if I got a response, if I had an interview, if I got hired. It's easy to remember who I've contacted before, and which mailings have been the most successful.

Introductions / Re: Good Day, All!

Hi and welcome, Ashleigh! Congrats on graduation. You can probably find some reasonably-priced books on Amazon. If you do a search for "books" in the search box, you'll find a number of them recommended by members.

The Green Room / My stage manager brain took over....
« on: Nov 27, 2014, 09:52 am »
...as I was prepping to host Thanksgiving. The serving dishes are all labeled with post-its of what goes in them, there's a schedule of when to start cooking each dish, cooking responsibilities have been divvied up amongst the team, and the dining room table preset was done first thing this morning.

(And of course, the coffee has been made.)

Happy Turkey Day, everyone!

Love that the "AEA docs" is on there- one of my most frequented sites! Definitely a tough matchup with webmail though.

As for software, I'm rooting for Spreadsheets all the way!

Employment / Re: Finding jobs for when I graduate
« on: Nov 18, 2014, 10:52 pm »
1. See if your professors/university has connections to local theatres.
2. Look at the websites of theatres in your area to see if they offer them (or in the area you want to work in). Some might not have internships listed now, but might have a page about their internship program, and when they start accepting applications.
3. In the upper right-hand corner of the page, there's an internship survey, where people rate internships that they have done. Check out the theatres you're interested in.
4. Do want to work in theatre, opera, dance, all of the above? Putting a few filters on what you're looking for will help narrow down your search.
5. What area are you looking in? There are often job posting websites or listervs for different markets.

I'm guessing it's a little early for most theatres to be posting internships for the 2015-16 season, but you can probably figure out where you're interested in now.

Hi and welcome, Ali!

My current show is a new children's musical, The Gift of Nothing, based on the comic strip Mutts. I always seem to do a fun "family" show at the holidays, which I love! This show is fun and cute and has a great score so I'm looking forward to running it.

The Gift of Nothing
The Kennedy Center
Dir. Aaron Posner
Nov. 23-Dec. 28

Performance calendar here- there are also school shows not listed, so PM me if you want to shadow.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Flameless sparklers
« on: Nov 01, 2014, 02:57 pm »
Have you ever seen those toys that you get at the circus that have fiberoptic things coming out of them with lights on the end? Google "fiberoptic toy" and you'll see what I mean. That's what I think of when I head "flameless sparkler".

Good luck!
