The Green Room / Re: Just a reminder . . .

Thank you Matthew, I think especially the college grads need to keep this in mind. If you keep a geographical location as the peak indicator of success - especially when so many others have the same indicator, or are told you only really 'make it' when you work there - you're bound to experience some disappointment.

I feel another topic coming on: What would you call lewd backstage acts and who would you name them after  ;D

"The act of engaging in sexual activity (often a quiet blowjob, so as not to attract attention) while backstage during a play or other theatrical performance. Named for Sir Laurence Olivier, widely praised as one of the greatest actors of all time."

And for the first time ever, Google lets me down.

OK, I'll ask - what's a sloppy Olivier?

The Green Room / Re: Life (As Seen Through Performance Reports)

Tonight's performance of A Restful Week Before Christmas screeched to a halt near the end of Act I when the stage floor started to make 'squishing' sounds. Apparently the water heater ruptured without notice during preshow and water leaked under the stage floor, creating huge quantities inconvenience and worries of mold growth. All future performances of A Restful Week Before Christmas have been indefinitely postponed.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Paid Internships

I've done internships at North Shore Music Theatre (Danvers MA), PCPA Theatrefest (Santa Maria/Solvang CA) and Virginia Opera (Norfolk VA). All of them were paid and I would recommend any of them, depending on what you're looking to specialize in.

The Green Room / Re: Spiderman's Stage Managers
« on: Dec 18, 2010, 01:50 pm »
Thank you for posting, it was informative to finally see the production from stage management's perspective.

The best part:
The duo's track record proved a boon to the show and a confidence builder to actors not used to such technical productions. Patrick Page, who plays the Green Goblin, remembers that when he signed up to do the show, he stopped by the theater to see what was going on. The first person he saw was Purvis, with whom he'd worked on "The Lion King."

"I said, 'OK, now I know I'm supposed to do this. Now I'm comfortable,'?" he recalls. "I have two stage managers I would trust with my life calling the cues."

That is what I want every one of my actors to feel when they see me; that's the reputation I want to follow me.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Backstage at the Nutcracker

The most I've had was 16, but luckily they were good ones! I couldn't handle an all-girl kid cast, that's a different monster all together.

My knee jerk response to this is "no no no, oh hell no." I don't see enough reason as to why any manager would need to be present that many times (any time more than once - maybe a preview)...in fact, if the manager is the parent, there's huge potential for opening a big can of worms down the road, which obviously happened. Especially when the manager begins to have conversations with the director on how they don't agree with the choices being made. It's a 'stage parent' disguised as a 'manager' and 'stage parents' don't know where to draw the line. Real 'managers' do. Cut the umbilical cord, it isn't professional.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Gifts!

Very nice bag but I want something not requiring lugging. One of the elves (yup I said elves) at a party I was singing last nite had a very cool and comfy backpack style with a well-hidden and useful pop-out rolling wheel/handle that was cheap and really hardy. He is sending me the info on where to purchase (he says it's way cheap, like Walmart cheap) - he actually tests backpacks for a living, gets paid to go camping, hitchhiking thru europe etc (very cool) and if it can handle that, it can handle my theater needs! Once I get the info, will share

Please do!

Tools of the Trade / Google Sites - The Glass Menagerie

Stage managing another production at Theatre Charlotte, which means another Google Sites for (at least) the production team. Since there's very little information on it at the moment, I've left it open for public view for those curious about using Sites for their productions. Take a look around and feel free to ask questions, it will be public until late January/early February when rehearsals begin.

At closing night on Sunday the playwright for my workshop production gave me a big hug and whispered in my ear, "Thanks for being the pro." Given his personality it was a nice shock and surprise.

The Pity 'Lay': The director/producer/whoever was at their wits end trying to find a stage manager, but to no avail. I felt bad for them and thought to myself, "I'm doing it to help them out, where's the harm in that?"
