The Green Room / Re: How do you "play?"
« on: Apr 20, 2010, 08:10 pm »
I play Rock Band. So much fun to pretend that you're a rock star!

Agreed. Beatles Rock Band was actually a big stress reliever for our production staff after one show's strike!

Smoking in costume has always been a no-go, at least at every theater I've worked in. The smell is difficult to get out. This is double enforced if you're working with rental costumes. Food has been a little more lax- just cover up first.

We recently implemented no eating backstage because we've got mice! Tea, water, etc are fine.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Other Theatre Jobs

You might also look into overhire crews in your area...I used to work with them to do hang+focus at other colleges, strike with the ballet, and once even a wedding! It can help hone skills AND give you work in a lot of different environments, which is definitely helpful.

I am a script supervisor who is becoming interested in Stage Management.  I used to notate all my scripts on set by hand, but then transitioned to using a tablet computer.  I fully feel that a tablet would be perfect in this field as well.  It is a computer that you can write on.  I use to for all of my forms and notes.  The computer can even translate handwriting into text.  Using architectual  software, I can create diagrams of the set to scale and move around the objects and make blocking notes without typing.  What do you all think of this technology?

The tablet computer makes more sense, to me, in that you can write and draw and it converts it all. It seems like the equivalent of scanning the script.

I'm afraid there is a fair amount of misinformation in the replies to this questions.  Some of it has been corrected, some has not.  I asked Doug Truelsen, the Equity SE Traveling Rep in Orlando, to comment - here's his response:

- You may take as long as you wish to earn those 50 points.  I have known people who have taken ten or more years to reach 50 points, often because they leave the business for a time.  Your points do not expire.  However, you should keep track of how many points you have and confirm them with Equity if you're coming back to theatre after being away for an extended period.

I was told about the "expiring points" by a producer at the theater that started me on my candidacy! Thanks for clearing that up (and answering a lot of questions!)

If you sign up for the EMC program, you have 4 years to get your 50 points (unless this has changed since I got mine). I ended up signing onto an Equity show that gave me my card, AND $100 off the registration fee. I think it's actually great because you get a few years to work and gain experience to actually have a resume to back up being an AEA member, but you have to think if you'll feasibly be able to get the points in that amount of time.

I've never done that show, but I'm working on Joking Apart right now and oh MAN Acykbourn writes some specific blocking. We have an entire tennis match going on- half onstage, half off. Good luck!

I'm waiting for iProp, the brushed metal prop table with a glossy, editable surface and nead little icons for all the props.  Ideally with a trashbin that automatically resorts the table when stuff gets misplaced.

Of course I also want a party and a pony, but these are just as unlikely.

Hah! How about iPlaces, which sets all actors at appropriate entrances with correct props/costumes at a set time?

I've always loved that quote (and Henry Rollins).

No, I won't kick out
"that smelly, dirty, fat man":
that'd be our playwright.

The Green Room / Re: can stage managers take a joke?
« on: Apr 01, 2010, 11:29 pm »
Ok, funny thing from today-

a couple of the actresses got together and, post-show, sent ME a performance report with all sorts of crazy things. Highlights include "Audience Response: Rowdy, possibly intoxicated" and "Props: Accidentally put regular coke in as coffee instead of diet, caffine free. [Actress] subsequently went on a caffeine/sugar induced rage through Act I."

The Green Room / can stage managers take a joke?
« on: Apr 01, 2010, 03:03 pm »
My current show has had, well, some difficulties. Putting in understudies last minute, a bout of food poisoning mid-show, replacing an actor, some diva fits, etc.

It's April Fools, and while I have a good sense of humor, it is NOT the day to tell me you're going to be sick, won't go on, won't let so-and-so do your costume change, etc. Because there's the chance you aren't kidding.

One of my actors jokingly asked if stage managers can take jokes, since they always seem on edge about things that could go wrong.

I think because we're so used to stepping in when things go haywire, it's hard to NOT assume the worst. Or maybe it's just me.

Hey dear! 8)
i'had found this solution: http://www.framvaligeria.it/en/prodotto.php?id=5B916E6C-8886-8E48-D1BE-08F51DBEA501

Is exactly in the middle from a normal trolley bag and a small flight case.
I'm really very happy!
Let me know!
Best :)

Oh wow, I really love this. It looks like an old train case! (Appeals to my vintage-loving heart!)

The Green Room / Re: Show post-poned due to quitting actor

We actually had to fire an actress yesterday- with two weeks left of the run. It was from a lot of different factors, but the moment I had to tell the cast we had to let her go, the rumors started flying. I had people HOUNDING me to know "what really happened!" It's been maddening.

Fortunately, our assistant will be stepping into the role for the rest of the run.
