Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Stage Manager Pay
« on: Feb 06, 2013, 01:35 am »
This sounds like a project. Why are you asking? You can look up pay scales in all the contracts on the AEA sites under agreements, and you can ask your local community and small theatre SMs what they make, but most of all, why is that your first qq? What is the question you mean to ask: is it whether you can make a reasonable living as a stage manager, or are you asking if pays enough for your ideal lifestyle? I don't hear you asking about our job.....so I am wondering why you want to know.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: A Difficult Designer
« on: Jan 31, 2013, 12:27 pm »
May I humbly suggest you plan a designer run - this is a stumble thru but gives all designers an idea of staging and is a vital element for all designers. This is usually done before the light plot is due, so they can design around specific ideas. It also allows notes to include things like "on p. 7, X is now entering thru the USL doorway instead of the DR vom" and know the LD has a reference point from their notes. The LD shd be able to give you a date to attend a designer run - or at the least, as noted above, an run for each act.

It sounds like the LD and director have not sat down and discussed concepts. This is kinda vital and needs to happen asap. But that's on their schedule. Either way, this is an classic excuse for a paper tech w the LD, director and you talking thru the play prior to tech and outside of rehearsal hours, whether in a coffee shop or at the theater, uninterrupted for 2-3 hours as the director explains his/her vision while the LD asks qqs and rough places cues.

Your response shd be to initiate a conversation w the director. You can help find time for those two links to connect, and to collect options for a designer run and a paper tech. Then, as SM, email your entire design team to inform them that these are happening, here are suggested dates for a designer run, please state preferences or offer options so it can be scheduled in enough time for the designers to do their work.

And ......good luck.

The Hardline / Re: EMC program Pros. vs. Cons
« on: Jan 28, 2013, 09:20 pm »
Yes, EMCs are invited to many AEA workshops and events, pretty much anything that isn't restricted to AEA members, and at open calls are ahead of Non-Eq folks - which can be useful for handing off a resume.

...other than in a right-to-work stage, basically, yes, you have unlimited time to earn those 50 weeks, have up to 5 years to decide what you want to do once you've earned them, can join any time you are offered a contract, and must join once you've earned 50 weeks and are working in an AEA house.

You can always check w an AEA rep on this, esp if you live in a right-to-work state.

The Green Room / Re: ARTICLE: In Defense of Stage Managers
« on: Jan 14, 2013, 10:49 am »
posted to my FB SM friends. Thanks for the article!

I have worked with directors and designers like that. Other than one time, I just kept my head down and kept moving. They are losing a valuable resource by making that judgment. Most of these are either young designers, or directors/designers who have only worked with young/student SMs. It's sad, because not only do we have to be able to understand and implement in order to maintain their vision after opening - which is based in creativity, but also we can make their lives so much easier......

Not even counting solving crises mid-show mostly without stopping and, in some cases, without even actors knowing there had been one.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Groundplan Doesn't Fit
« on: Jan 11, 2013, 11:43 am »
It's all been said but yes, check w the director.  But just as an FYI, it is common for the rehearsal space to have different dimensions from the stage, so finding out where the director wants to cheat dimensions (or not) is essential - and their decision based on what is more necessary.
