Hello and welcome! Check out the Students and Novices board- there's lots of advice for people who are in high school as well as active in their community's theatres.

Introductions / Re: Hi!

Hi and welcome aboard (from a fellow DC-er). There are definitely events that need SMs and other skilled technicians- you might try looking up some event companies in the area. Those jobs can be hard to come by but if you find work at one event, it can lead to more gigs, especially if you develop a relationship with the producer/producing organization.

Best of luck!

Kay, the Social division had an upset like we've never seen! A strong competitor like Twitter trounced by Tumblr in the first round....not to be predicted, this round. Analysts are crediting Tumblr's victory to a last-minute swell of support by the SMblr community, who came out to support their team. It will be interesting to see how it fares in the next round, where it's matched up against Facebook, who has a wider (though not necessarily more dedicated) base of support.

Over in the Website division, Web Calendar sailed through, beating Doodle 24-3. But can it beat Webmail in the next round? Tune in to see!

December Madness 2 / SOCIAL, Round 3: SMNetwork vs Pinterest
« on: Dec 08, 2014, 12:03 am »
Here it is, ladies and gentlemen! The entrance of the much-lauded SMNetwork into the tournament. The crowd-sourced reference for Stage Managers is bound to garner the popular vote- let's see how far it can go in this competition! It's competing with Pinterest, the popular image-based site with its own loyal group of fans, in this first round.

The facts:

SMNetwork boasts a membership of more than 5000 stage managers of all ages, levels of experience, and interests. It has threads on a multitude of topics, from the “big picture” questions to the minutiae of everyday SM life. SMNetwork has a strong team this year, with boards on Employment, Tools of the Trade, Plays and Musicals, and Students and Novices, just to name a few. Its secret weapon is the search bar, allowing users to access a treasure trove of information contained in previous posts. This team has made some smart plays during the regular season – the addition of the Internship Survey and Been There, Done That have brought new levels of utility to the site.

Pinterest is certainly more focused on the personal than the professional, but this site really is what you make of it! It's more than just DIY craft ideas: Search for a new hairdo for work, “how to dress for professional success”, find a new bag for carrying scripts around...just some of the ideas this crowd-sourced site provides. You never know what tidbit you'll stumble across on this site- a recent trip to Pinterest-land unearthed a list of keyboard shortcuts, exercises you can do at your desk, and some easy lunch ideas to pack and take with you.

Cast your vote in this Social showdown!

It seems like Youtube is thoroughly demolishing Lifehacker.....Is this a hometown team blowing away the visitors? Lifehacker fans, defend your choice!

Youtube supporters, what's the most bizarre rehearsal use of Youtube that you've found?

Web Calendar covers any online-based calendar- Apple Calendar, Google calendar, etc.

December Madness 2 / Re: SOFTWARE Round 2: Excel vs. PDF

Well, spreadsheets are pretty universal. :) A spreadsheet with formulas can save a lot of time/effort if used properly.

This is a tough one- Excel has my vote but just by a hair. I remember the days before PDFs were widespread, and now that it's so easy to export a document as a PDF without another program is just fantastic.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Invaluable Advice
« on: Dec 05, 2014, 02:28 pm »
Reviving a slightly old thread to ask a favor. I am working on updating the stage management handbook for my college and I was wondering if I could use the advice given on this page in that handbook? This advice page would be on its own separate page and each poster would be credited for their contributions.

You might want to send the people you would like to quote a PM- they may not see this thread.

The Green Room / Re: The Great SM Gift List
« on: Dec 04, 2014, 12:49 pm »
Resurrecting an old thread.... I got a really lovely, useful gift recently. My mom designed me a new set of business cards and had them printed. They are great- I didn't even realize how outdated my old ones were (probably 10 years old!) The content was still good but the design refresh was a welcome change!

Something to ask Santa for!

Well, Kay, the first round of our Website division was a sweep- Webmail blew AEA Docs away, 29-2. Webmail had a more diverse team this year and some are questioning if AEA Docs even had a chance against such a highly seeded competitor.

The Social division was also quite one-sided, with the popular Facebook team the clear winner over Yelp. This 28 to 4 match was not much of a contest, but one has to consider what strong competitors Facebook will face in the next round. Fan favorite SMNetwork or the highly lauded LinkedIn could prove too much for this social team- but we'll see.

In Round 2 we have the highly anticipated Doodle vs Web Calendar match. Over in the Social division, we've got Twitter vs. Tumblr, which could be a close one.

Game on!

December Madness 2 / SOCIAL, Round 2: Twitter vs. Tumblr
« on: Dec 04, 2014, 12:19 am »
In the continuing battle for the Social division, our next match features two strong up-and-comers!

We've got Twitter, the 140-character thought-machine that seems to be everywhere! Light on its feet, it's a strong contender among the theatre community. Find out about job postings, keep track of what's going on at your favorite theatre, keep an eye out for papered houses, and keep in touch with your colleagues via this more casual approach to professional networking.

On the other hand we have Tumblr, the microblogging platform with a strong visual component. Share your thoughts with the world on your custom Tumblr site. Tag your posts and be a part of the larger theatrical conversation. Is this newly popular site strong enough to knock out the hashtag king?

The winner of this match faces off against a very strong Team Facebook!

Vote! Poll remains open through midnight at the end of December 7, EST.

December Madness 2 / WEBSITE, Round 2: Doodle vs. Web Calendar
« on: Dec 04, 2014, 12:17 am »
To schedule, or.....I'm not even going to finish that sentence- the answer is obviously “to schedule!” But what's your weapon of choice?

Doodle- Is there anything greater than a site that has each individual member register their availability, and then tell you what the best meeting time is? Anything that saves you the back and forth schedule inquiry emails (“Is everyone free on the 6th at noon? No? How about at 2p? Or the 7th, but only between 11a and 11:30a?”) is a great scheduling tool and worthy of consideration for your vote in this showdown of time management.

However, Doodle has a worthy competitor in Web Calendar, one of the staples of the stage manager's (and theaters') toolbox. The ease of access, the many layers of information available, the compatibility with mobile devices.....All strong skills by this popular series of websites. The possibilities with Web Calendar are endless, from a quick-glance view of the rehearsal schedule, an overview of the load-in and tech calendar, managing your own personal meeting calendar, to keeping track of colleagues' birthdays. Web Calendar's going to be a tough one to beat! Is Doodle scrappy enough to knock WC out? Cast your vote!

The winner will compete with Webmail, a strong Round 1 winner, in the sweet 16.

Poll remains open through midnight at the end of December 7, EST.
