Introductions / Re: Introduction to Me!
« on: Dec 17, 2014, 10:13 am »
Hi and welcome, Jenna!

It can be hard to get those first few jobs. Have you considered an internship to gain experience? Or, applying for a lower-level position like production assistant? Do you have any connections from your university that you can use to help you get those first few jobs?

Check out the Employment board- it's got lots of info for job seekers.

This match seems like no contest- web-based email is one of the great digital communication methods of our time, so I can't say I'm surprised that the match is swinging this way.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Contracts?
« on: Dec 15, 2014, 08:00 pm »
That's true.  I've never had to do anything but distribute them in the past.  In this case I suppose I'm technically co-producer since the director, composer/sound designer and I are the only three on the production team.  Nevertheless, it seems like there must always be something to keep people accountable.  Apparently it's naive to expect them to pull their weight because of passion for the project, or even for pay!, if there aren't dire consequences.

I have been thinking about this topic for the last few days. It's true that you can create contracts that outline the expectations for both how actors will behave, and what the theatre will provide in return, but in truth, the actors have to want to. They can want to for a variety of reasons: because it's their job, because they are getting paid, because they take pride in their work, because they love the company/show/director/ensemble, or some other reason.

The "dire consequences" are that you get replaced, and do not get paid. If they don't want to be in the show, I would replace them.

Now, if it's just a matter of them being late, there are some things that you can try - the primary thing is to talk to them about it. Figure out why they are late and see what can be done to fix it. But, missing rehearsals/leaving in the middle of rehearsal indicates to me that they don't want to be there.

My conversation similar but not exactly the same as Matthew's - I start with some of the broader artistic questions, and then focus in on the more technical things toward the end.

Why this project? What's your relationship with this show? Have you worked with anyone from the cast/design team before? What's your relationship with the theatre?

I do a lot of new plays, which often do workshop productions before a fully realized production, so I ask how the workshop went, and what the director learned from it. What changes were made? How involved is the playwright going to be in the process? Do you anticipate a lot of script changes?

If the project itself is a workshop, what is the goal of the workshop?

Rehearsal questions- Room setup up, breaks, rehearsal items needed, are any "coaches" being used? Schedule questions. Is there anything s/he needs in rehearsal? What can I do that will help you?

December Madness 2 / Re: SOFTWARE Division semis: Word vs Excel
« on: Dec 15, 2014, 10:57 am »
Wow, this is a tough one. I am honestly going to have to think about this for a while.....

I'm leaning Excel right now- I can make Excel do just about everything Word can do, though it takes a little more formatting. A little harder to force Word to have Excel-like functions.

Sorry to say that it didn't make much of a difference in these matches, Kay- both Offstagejobs and LinkedIn had early leads that carried through the rest of the match.

Over in Websites, Offstagejobs won the tip off and took a straightaway right to the basket. With that kind of momentum, AirBnB didn't stand a chance, and Offstagejobs swept the match 30-1. An aggressive offense kept Offstagejobs on top in this match- but can it defeat Youtube in the next round?

In the Social division, Linkedin swept Hootsuite in a whopping 22-6 victory. But faced with the undefeated SMNetwork, can it stand its ground? Some are questioning the utuility of LinkedIn's networking abilities. Let's see how it faces off against the industry giant.

The reason contracts are created by the producer is that a contract is an agreement between the producer and the actor (or SM, or designer, etc), for certain services in exchange for an agreed-upon fee. As an SM, I wouldn't be able to create or enforce such a contract- that's something the producer needs to handle.

As a production manager, non-AEA actor contracts are something we create/use every time. Good stuff to include:
Name of employee
Role
Show name
Dates of employment
Fee and schedule of payment
Performance dates/times
Any agreed-upon conflicts
Description of services
Termination conditions

In your situation, if your company does not/will not use contracts, I would suggest creating a list of "Responsibilities of the Actor" sheet- something similar to what is in the AEA SM packet. You can talk through it at first rehearsal, and post it on the callboard. That way, the expectations are clear from the get-go.

It looks like we may have another runaway!

Well, LinkedIn does have the advantage of being much more widely known. I confess that I had to do a little research on Hootsuite before this competition- I'd never come across it before. And, Hootsuite seems best suited for someone who has a lot of social media feeds to keep track of. If you don't have that, I'm not sure how useful you'd find it.

Rounding out the first level of this tournament, we have a showdown between Offstagejobs and AirBnB- you couldn't find two teams that are more different in this tournament. They come from opposite sides of the “useful technology” spectrum, but both are powerhouses in their own right.

It's been an exciting series here at Backstage Stadium. Youtube knocked out Lifehacker with a solid 23-8 victory. But will it be able to take the winner of our Round 4 Website match, either Offstagejobs or AirBnB?

Over in the Social division, SMNetwork breezes through this round with a shutout 29-0 win. We all expected it, as it's the reason we are all here. How far can this industry-specific social network go in this tournament?

Over to Kay for the App and Software wrap-up.

Well, it seems that this match is no contest. So far not a one Pinterest supporter has made a peep. (Not entirely surprising given that this game is on SMNetwork's home turf. Is this match going to be a shutout?
