The Green Room / Re: Any other crafters out there?
« on: Jul 28, 2010, 11:02 pm »
What a great idea!  How cool that would be in my apartment.  All I'd need to do is stain the outside wood to match my furniture and add legs.  Got an extra hockey table?  ;)

Found ours at the Goodwill. I love finding things and fixing them up (I stained and repaired my Goodwill-found coffee table- I'm very proud of that).

Kay, did you mean that post to be in the "what did you learn today" thread?  LOL

I used to be a big knitter, but currently it's too hot to knit.

I love to build things....currently working on turning a Nok Hockey set into a coffee table for my boyfriend's apartment.

Pardon me for asking, but what is Nok Hockey?

Construction projects are AWESOME crafts!

Nok Hockey is a wooden game that's sort of a cross between air hockey and pool. The board looks like this:

we're putting some plexi on the top and adding some legs.

The Green Room / Re: Being friends with other stage managers
« on: Jul 19, 2010, 01:13 pm »
I have a few friends who are stage managers, but the majority of them are whatever-slash-stage-managers so we usually don't have much job overlap. They're also nonunion, so that keeps us from the same jobs as well. The other SMs I am friends with who are union aren't close friends, but it's not due to any job competition. In fact, I've found it good to have their names/emails/numbers to send jobs to them if I can't take them, and I've been lucky enough that they've done the same for me.

I did go a "stage manager party" once to try to meet more SMs and I didn't like the vibe...but I was also recovering from the flu at the time, so I'd be willing to give it a go again.

[Maybe it's time for SMNetwork NYC Gathering????

I was thinking the same thing the other night! Meetup would be great.

As for my learning...my current show has a deaf lead actress, so I am learning bits of sign language every day! Today it was "awkward," "drunk," and "kiss."

The Green Room / unusual rehearsal spaces
« on: Jul 14, 2010, 12:02 am »
I'm currently rehearsing in an armory museum. It's great, because there are large open rooms with giant noise-blocking doors. We have loads of space and it's generally very quiet. Though I occasionally have to remind actors to NOT use the Civil War-era china for rehearsal props. :) This is actually the THIRD time I've rehearsed a show in a museum.

So this post's purpose is twofold....just to hear the interesting places you've rehearsed AND to enlighten folks to some potential rehearsal spaces that they may not have thought about before.

Tools of the Trade / Re: PROPS: irish car bombs (beverages)
« on: Jul 09, 2010, 10:26 am »
(thanks for the edit, Kay. I was a little tired when I made the original post!)

After talking about this with my consultant (boyfriend)...I think Manhattan Special, a coffee soda, is going to be the stand-in for the Guinness. It's very dark AND slightly thicker, which I think will look better.  With this, I think the condensed milk might taste pretty good.

I'll keep you posted on what we end up doing...this is one of the more complicated props I've dealt with in a while!

Tools of the Trade / PROPS: irish car bombs (beverages)
« on: Jul 08, 2010, 11:36 pm »
Alright. I'm usually pretty good with food props, but I need some help.

I'm doing a show where two actors drink Irish Car Bombs. It involves pouring a pint of Guinness, then dropping a shot glass with half Jameson, half Bailey's into the glass and chugging the whole thing.

The guys make them onstage, pulling the ingredients from behind the bar. Besides the ingredients, part of the look is the fizz when the shot is dropped. I'm hoping to tint some root beer for the Guinness, and that a drop in will make it fizz up a bit. But the rest of it...I don't want anything too gross or hefty since they do have to chug it quickly.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: clarified the title so that it doesn't look like we're being rude. - PSMK

The Green Room / Re: Summer projects
« on: Jun 25, 2010, 01:35 pm »
My current show closes this weekend, then I'm off to Monza/Milan to work at Special Olympics Italy (and vacation, of course!). Once I come back I'll be doing a Fringe show AND starting preproduction for my fall show, Balm in Gilead....a cast of 20 and 3 children! Just mentally preparing myself for that. :)

Mad you can't find prop?
"Well, who touched it last?" "I did."
Keep track of your stuff!

I use sailing gloves for all the reasons mentioned above AND- they seem to run a bit smaller than mechanics or other types of gloves. Good for small hands!

Just got two of my shows for next season:

Balm in Gilead
The Changing Room

If anyone has either of those, that'd be a huge help! Please PM me. Thanks!

The Green Room / Re: Vacation Suggestions
« on: Jun 10, 2010, 10:05 am »
The last big vacation I took was Germany and Prague. Gorgeous, not too touristy (but enough English that I could navigate), great history. Also, I was able to go to the theater and the opera in both countries, which was a thrill for me.

And within the US....I love going to Austin. Very laid back, lots of live music, just a lot of fun!

Definitely less appealing for a kid, but what about pumpernickel bread?

While I've never been in a situation where it's been as extreme as you've described, I found a simple "Is this something we can discuss later so as not to hold up rehearsal?" can be helpful. Also gives them time to cool down!
