The Hardline / Re: MEDIA: Video versus Photo
« on: May 17, 2013, 08:29 pm »
Also, these roles fall under PR/publicity rather than photo calls and performance taping - let that info lead you - as well as calling the rep

(not counting, the mark of a good stage manager isn't always determined by the difficulty of calling a show, but solving problems on the fly, dealing with fractious designers or battling actors during rehearsal, etc - how do you determine what to choose as the above-and-beyond factors)

Great idea - but I'd worry 1) the producers will use this instead of providing housing or 2) I will hit my head when I sit up suddenly, awakened by some emergency or other....

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Learning Lighting

Take a class in lighting at the local city or community college. And - no offense meant, but start talking to lighting designers. They will know where to suggest far better.

(Thanks Scott - I forgot abt the overlap increment) - but yes, call your rep first.

ASK your AEA rep.

But - on SPT-3, with 30 hrs of rehearsal, that's 30 hrs per actor per week, no matter how you slice up the span of day. So assuming they are not leads in both pieces, you will want to try to have, for example, six 5-hr days with the actors working on each show over 3 days (or, 2.5 hrs on each show in one day). The trick is making sure the actor gets their proper breaks, since their brains might explode otherwise....yours as well. You, on the other hand, may well be going into OT if you are working both shows and in need of a proper union ASM (are they rehearsing simultaneously or separately?).

The company may have negotiated a compromise deal for the actors and SMs who are doing both shows in rep, so again, call your rep.

Ruth's point exactly. I have no issues with helping out or being a mentor - I train new ASMs/SMs all the time. But I don't have any interest in doing someone's homework for them. If a student takes the time to look for answers here and still has questions, I am far more likely to weigh in. And if they want to stay in touch and open a conversation, that's great too!

And yes, many great discussions and good details have come from homework forums when the person asking cites examples of problems or asks abt specific circumstances.

the trick is to convince those hiring of that......

That's kinda why I stopped responding, unless qqs were very specific and I thought I had something to add. Too many years of teaching - I really don't want to do someone's work for them, not even including taking credit for my input. I will chat w someone if I have time, and I will respond in specific rather than general situations, but too many essays have taken their toll.....

(may I suggest - knitting?)

Rita! What's the show - is it with the Robey or Latino Theatre Company, or perhaps Playwright's Arena? Who are you working with?
