This is a terrific list of information that already exists on this board.  Thanks for taking the time to compile and categorize it!!

If you're in an urban area, you don't need a GPSr to geocache.  A smart phone with the Geocaching app. installed works very well, as does simply looking at a Google satellite map prior to leaving home, or even printing one out and taking it with you.  I cached for three months in NYC without any tools, before I broke down and purchased a GPSr.  But if you are caching in wooded areas, the country, hiking, etc. it will behoove you to own a unit, yes.

As for that geocaching.  I've been wanting to get into that, but I don't have a GPS.  Must you absolutely own a GPS to geocache?

Can you add more than one tag at a time?

I am not in favor of banning all classroom assignments, but I think there should be some limits.  What we, as experienced SM's and long-time Forum members really object to has been clearly stated: answering the same questions, in essay format, over and over again.  Answering these questions fully, really takes a lot more time and thought than one or two paragraphs can justify. That's why Stage Management books exist, after all, because there is so much to say about any subject, and so many different angles of approach to any topic.

So, here are my thoughts:

If a student has the assignment to INTERVIEW Stage Managers and get answers to either assigned or self created questions, I propose they post, as usual, making the request, following the guidelines.  But no SM on this forum should be expected to ever answer more than ONE question for any assignment. When the questions are posted, if we see one we'd like to answer, we send a PM or email to the student letting them know which question we are prepared to answer, and they let us know if that question is taken or still available.

AND, the SM should have the choice to either send them a written answer (as in the past) or to set up a phone session or internet chat with the student to answer the question. This puts the onus on the student to block out time to do their assignment, rather than just using our words and having us take all our time to do their work. Additionally, it puts the onus on them to take notes while we talk about our craft, which for many of us is easier than writing an essay. Again, THEY are really doing the hard work.  Then, if they have followup questions, they can ask right on the spot. Yes, this adds some steps to the process, but ultimately no one feels obligated or taken advantage of, and the student does the bulk of the labor. Personally, I would much rather schedule a 1/2 hour for a phone chat with a student than write a response. The written response will never be fully fleshed out enough. (And, before you all yell at me, I realize I might be alone here, and that many of you would rather craft a written response, on your own time, in the middle of the night.  You would still have that option.) If the student MUST interview one, and only one SM, then the phone idea really is a great option.  That's REALLY an interview, after all!

If the assignment is something other than an interview, then I think it's the student's personal responsibility to research elsewhere, search this site for previous threads, and after that's complete, then post a topic on the board describing the project, steps taken on their own to get the answers, and what ADDITIONAL information might be needed to finish it.

An addendum--the student should be forewarned that they may not get any responses at all from members of this Forum, and they should have an alternate plan!!

Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it!

Does anyone have an electronic script for ART? I prefer the American version, but British will do if it's all I can get my hands on.

Thanks,

Here's information about another tool for the job, coming out as a paid application for Mac OS 10.5 and higher. The Beta version is currently available for free.

The quoted portion of the post below, is incorrect and dangerous advice.  Although YOU, as the EMC, fill out a form and submit it at the start of each EMC job, the THEATRE is responsible for reporting your employment, every week, in writing, to Equity.  Getting credit for an EMC job after the job has finished, unless there has been some kind of mistake made, is a difficult process, and does not usually happen.  I advise against even considering doing something like this.

If you have questions about the EMC program and the associated rules and guidelines, feel free to call the Director of Outreach and Education at AEA.  If you have questions about the number of weeks you have accrued, or want to know if your last job has reported your work correctly, call the AEA Membership Department.  If you send me a PM, I can tell you who to ask for!

<snip>
There is a backwards way of still being able to work at an equity theatre as a non-eq that equity would frown upon:
Theaters that participate in the EMC program do not send all of the interns/etc to equity in case they might be an EMC member; you are responsible for getting the weeks submitted (by filling out a form and having the theatre send it it). If one happened to know that they would reach the 50 weeks with a certain job but also know that they are not ready to become equity they would simply have to not fill out the form. You can also backlog the weeks, so even after the show that you PAed/interned/etc on is over you can have the company fill out said form and send it in.

The Green Room / Re: smnetwork.org Board Layout
« on: Apr 06, 2010, 03:53 pm »
Ha! I don't have a tactful answer either.  The only layouts left are all the ones I don't like... :(

As much as I'd like to have a tactful answer for this, I simply got rid of all of the layouts that I don't like.

What happened to my simple blue and white layout?  It seems to have disappeared from the layout choices, and I don't like anything that remains, including default...

Tools of the Trade / New Printer Recommendations, Please!
« on: Feb 26, 2010, 01:11 pm »
My old printer, purchased in 2001 is about to reach the end of its useful, working life. I'm in need of a new printer to work with two Macs, a desktop running Snow Leopard, and a laptop running Tiger (for the time being anyway--the laptop will also be replaced soon.)

I'm looking for a multi-function (scan/copy/print) unit, that does great black and white documents but has the flexibility for to print photos as well, if necessary.  Ideally, if I can find a model that others are using successfully and happily, I'd like it to have a sheet feeder, and double sided printing capability.

What do you use in your home or office. and what would you recommend to me? Thanks in advance!
