Tools of the Trade / Re: Half-size binders

I think the novelty would wear off very quickly . . .

Especially cutting paper down . . .

Employment / Re: Locations and Area Codes

Again, I think that that the area code is pretty meaningless now a days - as people port their numbers all the time . . .

I think the addition of a picture can add the human face and the personal touch . . . we are, afterall, in the people business . . .

The Hardline / Re: EMC Weeks
« on: Feb 16, 2014, 10:24 am »
I think one week per calendar week per contract . . .

If you had overlapping weeks at two different theaters on two different contracts, you might be able to double count the weeks . . .

But, discuss with AEA . . .

But, don't discount your parents advice.

I know my parents "real world" advice help me guide my career early, and having their support (both emotional and financial) made my early days in theater possible.  The sooner you can get them to understand your world, the better - if you do indeed make a career out of this . . . they will be dealing with it for a long time.

For example, there would be a charge to a copyist to change the numbering, which, in the end, would not result in any additional revenue.

And, most likely, the repeated numbers were originally the same piece of music, and changes came later.

And song 7 probably existed at one point, and the team just didn't want t back and fill in that number . . . because all the paperwork for songs 8 and above would be thrown off,

End of the day, it's a miracle a new musical ever gets off the ground . . . let alone having musical pieces numbered correctly . . .

wait until you work on putting a new musical together from scratch . . . and the you will understand the horrors and challenges there are.

most likely, there is no financial impetuous for the publisher to clean up the numbering.

you can go ahead and renumber them if you want during pre-production, with the approval of your creative team.

but, don't get too frustrated about the small stuff, and most of it is the small stuff.

my question is . . . what if the break was taken late . . . .did gm pay overtime????

Employment / WHAT NOT TO PUT ON YOUR RESUME . . .
« on: Feb 08, 2014, 12:07 pm »
I know why they put it on there . . . they wanted to look cute, they wanted to be memorable . . . but t just came off as odd and immature . . .

Please don't put what level you are on Candy Crush . . . just don't.

Over ten years ago, I got a resume which included a photo montage of her day as a stage manager - it made her stand out . . . but not in a good way.

Be careful about being too cute or precious . . . it may just backfire.

The big problem is also I rarely give everyone a break at the same time . . . how do you track that . . . especially when running multiple rehearsal rooms?

The Hardline / AEA: Straight Six for First Rehearsal
« on: Feb 06, 2014, 02:03 pm »
AEA SM's - what the best way to schedule a straight six for a first rehearsal???  (That is get the actor's approval to do so . . .)

Thoughts?

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: E-mail Management
« on: Feb 05, 2014, 07:58 pm »
Or . . . delete everything at the end of the show, and make that common practice . . . that way you couldn't be held accountable for anything . . . although it may clear you of any wrong doing -  I guess if it depends if you have something to hide or not.

314
you can very easily satisfy both sides . . . '

send out an email

I know many of you don't read reviews, especially blogs, but our artistic director would like those who do read reviews to know about this blog.  if you don't read reviews, please delete this email.

OR

you can poll the actors and put together a mailing list for those who want to read them.  some may want them, but choose not read them until the show closes.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: E-mail Management

One of the first things I do on a new show is set up a show specific email . . .

PSM.TITLEOFSHOWHERE@Gmail.com (for example)
SHOWTITLE.PSM@Gmail.com (for example)

this keeps all shows emails in one location as opposed to mixed into one large pile.

I then set up labels that pretty much match my production book

Calendar
Daily Call
Production Reports
Performance Reports

Scenic
Lights
Sound

etc

plus

Actor Correspondence
Director Correspondence
Producer Correspondence

On closing of the show . . . I forward all emails to my main email . . . and a vacation response.

End of the day, by just breaking up shows into different emails does a lot to keep my life organized.
