Introductions / Re: A second chance Hello
« on: Jan 21, 2014, 08:06 pm »
I thank you for having me back, and thank you very much for the kind words. I wanted to introduce myself again, because I am different than I was last year.

I have picked up some great tips, over the summer, I worked with an amazing Equity Stage Manager. She was quiet and reserved, which is definitely different from me. The biggest tip I learned this year was "If you're talking, you're not listening" This statement has changed my position as a stage manager. It is now my mantra in rehearsals. Just because you are the stage manager doesn't mean you need to hear your own voice to earn respect.

I am learning to anticipate and recognize potential problems in rehearsal and that all comes from listening instead of talking.

I have found myself a bit more through some self discovery and am not nearly as anxious as I once was. Which I think was my biggest downfall.

I am happy to be back to this forum and, again, I appreciate your kind words.

Introductions / A second chance Hello
« on: Jan 16, 2014, 09:23 pm »
Hello,
This is my second chance introduction. My name is Mandi and I am in graduate school. I misused this website last year, and I want to apologize for that to all involved. I have been through a year of intense educational training, and I am fully ready to take the responsibility of my actions last year. I appreciate the chance to be back on this forum.

Thank you all again for a warm welcome.

Employment / Re: Tricky Interview
« on: Apr 15, 2013, 07:53 pm »
After I graduated from undergrad, I went to New York and worked on a show. Before the show ended, I started interviewing for jobs (theatre and not theatre) Every manager who I interviewed with talked about the expenses. I agree with dallas10086, Im sure they have had issues in the past with losing employees due to financial reasons. After those interviews, I decided to go back home to Ohio. They were right, I didnt have the money to stay even with the job offers. If you are confident in staying there, then you handled it very well. Good luck with interviews!

This is a pretty touchy subject. I have done numerous "kid" versions in my run in community theatre. I would have to agree that is unacceptable to rehearse the alternate version. It is very illegal. I have had this issue with some of my more experienced kids that have either done the adult version, or know it very well. Unfortunately, there are rules that everyone have to follow. I would say to stick to the script that you have the rights for.

Censorship is a bit ridiculous at times. Mostly, its for the parents and not the students. Society openly lets sex and violence into big budget movies and TV shows. Our kids are not stupid to that fact, and when we censor these big shows, it make them feel like they are children.

While picking a season, I would suggest having a meeting with the parents and asking them which version they would be more comfortable with. In our community, we get the same kids every time we audition a show. (We do get new kids alot, but primarily the same families).

I feel for you in this situation!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Useful iPad apps
« on: Apr 08, 2013, 06:51 pm »
I am just in transition with using the Ipad in shows! I recently called an entire dance show from the Ipad. The dance show had no script, so it was actually easier to use a word doc program (I used Textilus) to organize in columns, the cues, times, and what the cues did. I loved it! I was trained as a paper stage manager, but the Ipad is useful. I really enjoy having AutoCad WS on there as well. It keeps the director in the loop with the ground plans as they happen. I play with it everyday trying to find new stuff! I am looking forward to more insight from you guys!

Hello!
My name is Mandalyn Stevens. I am currently working on my MFA in technical theatre as a stage manager. I taught high school for 3 years after I graduated with my bachelors degree in theatre from The Ohio State University. I work more on academic and community theatre, but I am hoping to gain some time in Equity while I am in graduate school. Thanks!
