Students and Novice Stage Managers / College Interviews
« on: Jun 03, 2007, 09:35 am »
It seems as if all of my posts are about college.

Anyway, at my high school we don't run shows like actual, true shows. The stage manager doesn't call the cues and he or she works backstage. Our most recent show we had two WONDERFUL tech directors who showed me what it's like to run a show in the 'real world'.

By the time I go for college interviews, I will only have run one/two shows that will supply me with books but almost no rehearsal experience. Is there anything I can do to make myself more credible?

I'm debating between two schools to further my education in stage management. I'm stuck between DePaul University in Chicago and Illinois State University in somewhere in Illinois. I'm hoping to go into theatre education after a while.

Any suggestions? :)

I was holding up a flat my sophmore year when a janitor came rolling by with a Genie and clipped my ankle sending me sprawling to the floor and actually spraining my ankle.  I was an ASM that year so it was slightly awkward manuevering backstage on crutches.  THANKFULLY I just had to press a button but it could've been much worse.

I'm a junior in high school and lately I've been looking into colleges where I could stage manage as my major.

I live in the Chicagoland area and I REALLY don't want to go very far away from home.  DePaul University in Chicago and Webster University in St. Louis are the only two schools I know of that are in the general area.

If you know of any other schools around the Midwest OR have any recommendations/comments on the two schools I've listed it would be extremely helpful.

I am absolutely positive you will do wonderfully.  Granted, I'm still in high school and I just TRULY stage managed my first show this past weekend.  As nervous as you are, the show willl happen and it will happen smoothly and near perfectly.  Good luck. :)
