Tools of the Trade / Re: Useful applications for Blackberry
« on: Dec 18, 2010, 04:43 pm »
I use a Blackberry Curve 8530. I have some of the above apps too.

The one that helps me out the most is Flightview, which allows me track actor flights. I would be lost without it, since I usually pick them up. It's pretty accurate.

And for tracking actors, I've seen this (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia%26%23153%3B+-+Little+Buddy+Child+Tracker+(Blue)/9540703.p?id=1218123143064&skuId=9540703) in stores and thought specifically for using it for actors, which made me laugh.

10) Like everyone, I am human. I make mistakes, like everyone else. I may set props wrong from time to time. I may execute cues early or late or not a all. Just like you will forget lines and blocking, etc. Mistakes happen, so lets move on and deal with them, fix them, learn from them and do the best that we can!

The Green Room / Re: I can't believe I just had to do that...
« on: Oct 18, 2010, 11:30 pm »
A couple of years ago at the current theatre that I'm at, we toured a production of "HONK!" to an elementary school. All of the sound cues were on my laptop and we weren't able to connect it to the gym's sound system. I had to do all of the sound cues by mouth with a megaphone behind the set that we borrowed from the PE teacher. Fortunate for me, I always did the voice of the farmer live in our theatre anyway. The hard part was doing gunshots, glass crashing, animal noises, snow storm, etc.

I am looking for a version of "The Civil War - The Musical", music by Frank Wildhorn!

Please PM if you are willing to share an editable copy!

Thanks,

We've all read the other thread about how many times we've all stage managed, but how many times have you Stage Managed a particular play or musical multiple times. So far for me:

Vagina Monologues: Will be 4 times later this year. (Two different adaptations)
CATS: 2 Times (Both two different theatres in the same year)
A Christmas Carol: Will be 2 times starting this November (Same adaptation)

How about you?

The Green Room / Re: SMNetwork's Resident expert in...
« on: Aug 12, 2010, 05:43 pm »
I'd be the expert with animals.

I've always had an interest in Zoology and Primatology. If family and friends are uncertain about an animal question, they talk to me. I guess it comes from my love and fascination with animals, primates in particular. I used to go to the zoo with my grandfather all the time, where he was a docent. I learned a lot from him, as well as working at the same zoo for a couple of summers. But a lot of it is self taught, by reading a bunch of books and tv shows (Animal Planet, Discover, National Geographic, etc.).

If I weren't a Stage Manager, I more than likely would have gone into Zoology and Primatology. Probably focusing on Primates.

I actually used to make a little announcement at the beginning of tech...just to say "Hey, actors, now my focus has to switch to the tech elements, and that's my priority, not the acting. If there's something you want me to watch for, let me know, but know I might not be able to."
--I'll have to use that next time.

But, here is the thing . . . if a sequence is getting too difficult during tech, you might need to cry foul.

...we sort of need to figure out how we are going to do it during tech and NOT let the sequences get out of control.
--This is one of the things I'm trying to implement for next season and make things easier. Thank heavens for Qlab. I'm trying to get the theatre to go MIDI so that I can just press one button for lights, sound and any other device QLab will allow to be used with it. Especially on some shows next season that are projection heavy. This will be especially useful since 98% of the time during the season I don't call a show, I execute cues on my own. I've only called two shows this season.

Lol, First Midnight by any chance? When I did Into the Woods last summer our ASM literally gave us the heads up right before that sequence that we shouldn't even attempt to speak until it was over. Her spot cues alone were overwhelming, let alone mic, scenic shifts, etc.
--LOL! Actually no. First Midnight only has cues at the top and end of the music number. The hard cues are where scene shifts happen. Ones like the tower coming on stage and then going off after 30 seconds or so, trees being moved on stage, certain cues happening on certain visuals, board ops or spots taking own cues on actor visuals, etc.

OOPS! Ouch I knew if forgot to add something...Tag Line. Sorry about the Rebbe!

It's nice to know that I'm not alone in this. With my current show Into The Woods, which is very cue heavy. Blame it on the lighting and sound designer (Pointing to myself!) there are just sequences where I can't watch. So when an actor after the performance says "Did you see that?", I have to tell them no.

Difficult cue sequence...well, sorry actors.
There are simply some sequences I'm going to miss because of business offstage or difficult sequences onstage.
--Exactly!

... unless you get an ASM to call the show (rehearse your absence) - in which case you could potentially see the entire thing, or if the show is really simple and your presence is really more a formality rather than a true necessity
I'd love just to watch the show, but that is not possible, because lack of personnel. Of course I watch what I can and try to catch what didn't get this time, next time. Just wanted to see what everyone else's thoughts where on this.

Thank you all for your input!

Do any of you feel that it is impossible to watch 100% of the show during any performance. Especially if you are calling cues and have to look at your script a bit of the time or have to execute cues yourself. I myself have been trying to watch as much of the show as I can, but I just have too much going on to do so. How have some of you dealt with this?

So just wondering for those of you who are currently working on a Broadway or Off-Broadway show or have in the past. What is a typical performance schedule day like for you? From the moment you get into the "office" till you leave the "office".

The Green Room / Re: Why is it that...
« on: Jul 30, 2010, 04:43 pm »
Why is it that when you have a complex cueing sequence and it's also impossible to watch 100% of the show, an actor asked did you see what happened?

The Green Room / Re: How do you "play?"

Like some of the others on this thread, I am a gamer. First person shooters are an excellent way for me to release some steam or tension. Sometimes a good book helps too. Or watching any of the television series I have digitally or on DVD from start to finish (season-to-season). I also love to tinker with Qlab on my mac.

Yes Matthew. I saw the prompt book and I cringed. I hope that was not the actual one. No one messes with that!
