Tools of the Trade / Re: New Flexbinder
« on: Nov 11, 2009, 06:42 pm »
I LOVE the new flex binder for my lighting focus sheets and my call script.  I don't love it so much for my blocking book.  I need something sturdier for that.

"Also, and this may be older info. as well, but Wayne State seems to be a program dedicated to Stage Management, so why is it listed as a specialization? What is the criteria there?"

I went to Wayne State and graduated a few years ago.  The program at Wayne State is dedicated to Stage Management, but the wording on the degree is MFA in Theatre I believe.  It doesn't say MFA in Stage Management, but the program is focused on stage management.  Learning through experience.

Let me know if you have any questions about the program.

Employment / Sub Calling Stage Manager
« on: Nov 11, 2009, 03:32 pm »
Hello All--

I've been a substitute calling stage manager for a few shows in the past and am not sure how to list them on my resume.  Some of them I only called once or twice, but I feel I should put it on my resume to show I can do it.  These are typically shows that I have been brought in just to call and was not the asm for.

Any thoughts?

Employment / Curriculum Vitae- CV
« on: Aug 02, 2009, 03:46 pm »
Hello All--

I have recently started applying for work in the educational field and many of the jobs as for a CV.  I was wondering if anyone had a sample one they would care to share or thoughts on what made a good cv.

Thanks!

The Hardline / Re: AEA Teachers

I know a past professor of mine asked the same question, only he wanted to SM as a sub in case someone was out for some reason or another and AEA wouldn't allow it.

Well I would have to agree with PSMAK that Wayne State is a good place, but I would also suggest looking into Drake University in Des Moines, IA.  They offer a BFA in technical theatre and design and give a very well rounded education.  There are tons of students at Drake from the Chicago area and most don't have problems getting back to the city when they want.  Drop me a message if you want more information.

Employment / Re: Mileage for Non Union
« on: May 03, 2007, 06:59 pm »
Well they wanted to fly me and then they realized I would need a car when I was there so they asked me to drive out.  But as they looked into the cost of housing and transportation they realized they couldn't afford it.  So we came to a mutual parting that the money wasn't right for the gas and work needed.  But will try again in the future for a longer contract.

Thank you everyone for your input!  LJH we were trying to get gas paid, but it has jumped so much this week alone it scared them off.

It is a 7 week job and they wanted to fly me at first, at their expense, but they had to other way for me to get around town and want me to bring my car.  I would be in one city for 2 weeks and then another about 2 hours away for the last 5 weeks. There is lots of public transportation in the first city and almost none in the second.  I do realize that mileage isn't a guarantee and it a bonus.  But if none is paid I would be spending my entire salary on gas/hotels and I can't afford that either.  I am not trying to make money on the mileage, but I don't want to loose money on it either. Thanks for the thoughts!

Employment / Mileage for Non Union
« on: Apr 30, 2007, 12:15 am »
Hey All--

I am currently working though a contact with a potential employer and was wondering on everyones thoughts on mileage and how to have the conversatation that the amount offered isn't enough.  It would be a 2,300 mile drive one way for me and a car would be needed for daily transportation once I was there.  I believe the Equity or IRS rate is .44 cents a mile, does anyone know if that is correct?  What is the best way to get the mileage reimbursed?  The theatre is small and this might strain their budget, but it would break mine.  If I have to I am prepared to walk away from the job, but it would be a good job for me.

Stage Management: Other / Re: Comparing rep, touring and opera
« on: Mar 21, 2007, 12:09 am »
I work in a rep theatre and the asm duties here are very light.  During tech the asm if the gopher/ glow tape person  and then in performance the asm isn't around at all, but needs to know the show call, just in case.

Hope that helps.

Yes, but will the packing tape come up easily?  Will it leave a residue behind?

Tools of the Trade / Keeping Spike tape down...
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 05:06 pm »
Hey All--

I've just started rehearsals for Into the Woods.  Myself and my ASM's taped the floor and two days later it is being torn up like crazy.  It is a tile floor and there are 2-4 acting classes in there during the day and then us in there at night.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get more life out of my spike tape.  I thought about dance tape, but was told that it would be hard to get up six weeks later.  Any help would be great.

I will tell the story about why I'm doing the poll after people have voted, but until then, vote away!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: marijuana and theatre
« on: Jan 22, 2007, 02:10 am »
I worked an event recently where there were many speical performing groups.  There were models, dancers, singers, and a group of Native American drummers and dancers. When I went to their dressing room it reaked of pot.  I was hired in for the event and not in charge, the people in charge said it wasn't pot and it was alright for them to smoke, it was some ritual/religious thing.  I can understand that, but I was concerned for the other performers and who ever had to use the dressing room the next day.  How do you handel that one?

Employment / VEGAS!
« on: Jan 20, 2007, 09:45 pm »
Hey Everyone--

Does anyone currently work in Vegas?  If so, do you like it? Hate it? Does anyone know the best way to get work in Vegas?  It's almost graduation time and I am tying to look at all sorts of options and Vegas sounds like fun.

Thanks for your thoughts--
