The Green Room / Re: What's next?
« on: Mar 17, 2012, 11:20 pm »
I think that's an excellent question to pose, as well as a realistic one. Statistics say that most stage managers rarely stay stage managers the length of their careers - especially women or those with families - though many transition into artistic administrative or other arts-related positions. You have to keep in the back of your mind the fact that your career as a stage manager means you will gain experience that translates well into several fields, should you desire to leave the arts altogether, and it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for those fields that interest you.

I know realistically that I won't be doing this forever, because at some point I expect the whole process of managing a production will lose its appeal and I'll wish to move on. If you mean 'what would I do,' as in what would be my next career step, I imagine I would be one of those that would transition into arts administration, most likely company management or administration within an arts department of a university/conservatory. I interviewed for positions in both within the past year, company management in Arizona (to be closer to family) and within a university (arts admin at Yale - on two separate occasions), because it would have been beneficial to my family (I currently bring in the only income). Genuine relief came over me when I didn't land any of the positions - which tells me I'm not quite ready to let stage management go.

(And I won't quote What I Did For Love, though I might start humming Finishing The Hat...)

All excellent advice. I would add spell-check with a human being, not the computer, and look online at experienced stage managers' resumes. Feel free to steal format and style, just not their experience. I heard once that an applicant falsified his experience, and the hiring stage manager caught it because it was his experience the applicant stole. It's never worth it.

It seems the first article was sensationalized and the actor was even able to attend a party afterwards after receiving two stitches. Still horrible that it happened, but the matter could have been much worse. Heaven forbid his staging required him to stab another performer. And I agree, why does it matter that the props manager was a woman? If it happened to be a man, would they have noted that he was male? Something else to think about.

Great article...but I kept seeing the typos!  ;)

Larger in length or circumference? If you mean circumference, what is her largest ring size? If they can't be purchased, can they be made? Does the actress have any latex allergies? Do the finger condoms need to be powder-free? Will these be purchased from props or other department? How many fingers get the condoms? Which fingers get the condoms? Are they on the same hand? Are they on both hands? Will she need assistance putting them on? Will she be in contact with any substance(s)? Can they be reused every night or will a new 'batch' be needed every performance?

New note: When Stephen stabs Alan with a knife, Stephen collects Alan's blood in a goblet and drinks it.

Here's another version a friend posted on my FB wall, though I think the top row needs to be all 'I don't know' shoulder shrugs.

Was the internship over five years ago? If so, I don't believe it's added, although it should have been archived.

Welcome! There are only a couple of us in North Carolina at the moment, so it's always good to see another one join the forum!

After the initial success of an autism-friendly performance of "The Lion King" sponsored by The Theatre Development Fund, there are plans for a repeat performance as well as doing the same for a performance of "Mary Poppins." Here's the article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/07/autism-broadway-shows_n_1261372.html

I would like to propose a similar venture at my children's theatre, hopefully working hand-in-hand with an organization like Autism Speaks, to provide one performance per production for autistic children and their families. I feel if we can provide one performance per production for sign language interpreter, I think we can take it a step further and reach out to these families.

Has anyone else attempted this? Or attended a similar performance? Aside from Autism Speaks, does anyone know of good resources for information? I'd like to have a good idea just what would be involved before I begin drafting a proposal.

"Construction-related delay?" This sounds good.

It's on my list!

Oh. You went to Starbucks during your break. Hmm. I had to work through the break. Oh, and before you ask, no I didn't want any so thanks for not thinking of me.

I'm one degree away from Kevin Bacon. But I'm only three away from Hugh Jackman.

He gave me a LOT of attitude during notes yesterday. I'm thinking I might accidentally call his blackout cue a little early.

I love my job, I love my job, I love my job....

Did you get the new office supplies catalog? Christmas came early!

Employment / Re: Response Time
« on: Dec 29, 2011, 09:37 am »
When I'm mentoring I emphasize a 24 hour response time, even if the response is "I've received your offer, thank you, let me get back to you in three days when things settle down and we can iron out the details." No one gets the telepathic messages of hey, can't take a minute for a quick email but you'll be waiting when I get around to it, right?
Matthew is right: those first initial emails can tell a lot about how you handle business.
