The Hardline / Re: AEA: reading grumble
« on: Jan 18, 2014, 11:33 am »
I am in the same boat as we speak, with producer in a tiff because I haven't dedicated a full 40 hr week to the reading PRIOR to first rehearsal. And altho I have already but in a good 30 hours of work on the phone, in meetings, etc, let alone breaking down the script, picking up and dropping off scripts and scores, and solving all kinds of scheduling issues they forgot to track during auditions and figuring out how to relay some props and furniture the venue doesn't have. Overtime? Don't even think about it. Not included in the rules, so not even under consideration.

We really need to revisit the staged reading guidelines - not even counting that the paperwork still reflects those living in the 5 boroughs rather than being an inclusive national list. Protections aren't a part of the deal.

I do understand we take these as ways to meet/work w folks, to fill in short gigs in the gaps etc, but holy cow.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Ensemble tracking
« on: Jan 16, 2014, 08:29 pm »
I don't use it for casts of 1000s, but it really helps with tracks for key ensemble members. And most of the huge shows I've done have tracks that don't include solo lines for everyone, just the key ensemble people. I know it's not true for all shows, but it has been for the ones I've done.

Also for shows where a few folks play myriad characters.

You can also color-code key ensemble players eg actor 1's lines are green highlight, actor 2 are yellow etc - of course, not if everyone in the ensemble has a line, but certainly where possible, I color code a track rather than a character

Tools of the Trade / Re: Skin-tone colored Ace bandages/wraps
« on: Jan 15, 2014, 12:37 am »
Medical industry doesn't need them to be invisible - in fact, makes their lives easier if they can be differentiated. And the hot new bandaging colors are very, very noticeable.

Costume rigging over/with bandages are often the best option. And - I can't recall the name of the product but we used a great flesh-toned fabric over our Stella's tattoos in the tiny house where we did Streetcar.

Either way, good luck!

KMC307's suggestion is really great - and a good carp can make one adjustment, that it can fold on itself so it lays flat when open, but takes a whole lot less room when struck. But also, easier to carry when it takes less space.

I have seen this done accordion style, or just a simple half-way fold. Even being able to fold it in half would mean carrying in a standard car instead of requiring a truck. Unless you have a truck anyway?

Matt, thanks for the brilliant summation. And now the topic will be locked.

Does anyone have the score to Spitfire Grill?

The Hardline / Re: Understudies for AEA theatres
« on: Jan 06, 2014, 01:04 pm »
I used to work at a LORT house that hired local nonAEA actors, paid them $100 a week to put their name on a piece of paper, and got mad if I wanted to meet, let alone rehearse them. Sadly, almost every show I did there, we needed those u/s. I remember taking a lead on a small show to the hospital with an emergency after the Sun matinee, cancelling the Sun nite show and dealing with management being angry when I explained they'd have to pay me for my all-day-Monday rehearsal with that u/s, and that we'd need a full put-in w full cast and full tech on Tues before the evening show to determine whether that show would go up or not. Thankfully, this was one u/s who actually had looked at the show once, even been to a rehearsal, a rarity at this venue.

Well, the SPT houses I work have no understudies at all. Even tho I have had to put in replacements on at least 3 occasions. But all other theaters have u/s - some union, some not, but I have always rehearsed them as soon as possible, since I almost always have had to put them in.

(I had to take a moment when you said folks were flown in from the west coast - how very unusual, and how cool for west coasters at last!)

Employment / Re: Still no word about payment
« on: Jan 05, 2014, 12:41 am »
Perhaps you need to draw up a contract and state clearly your terms, and have both you and them sign it, then make a copy for their files (you keep the original) and make sure it includes incremental payments which, if you don't receive, mean you walk - something you certainly tell them but also must be a hard promise you make to yourself.
