Hi and welcome, Rena!

You could use North, South, East, and West, or positions on a clock face (12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, etc). If you post signs in the rehearsal hall, everyone will know which direction is "North".

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsal Reports
« on: Oct 21, 2015, 09:39 pm »
I always say please and thanks, esp for things completed (which I also note, eg) SET: thanks for the lip on the upstage platforms. The actors feel much safer.

Putting a thank you in for a completed item serves a dual purpose- it also lets everyone else who gets reports know that something got done. So if you've been asking for a prop to get fixed for 3 days and you put a "thanks for fixing the table!" note in, the PM knows it's been taken care of and that they don't need to follow up.

The Hardline / Actor/ASMs on a TYA contract
« on: Oct 21, 2015, 07:24 pm »
I have a question for those of you who have worked under an AEA TYA contract. If you have had actors signed to an Actor/ASM contract, how have you made use of them? Has anyone ever used them in rehearsals?

I've had them a number of times, and never feel like I have very much that they can do, other than helping me with room setup or cleanup. Generally it's not helpful to have them be “on book”, as they have to be onstage as well. Similarly, I would never ask them to track props or costumes or any other normal ASM assignments.

I can see the usefulness of having the actors able to help with load-in/load-out in touring situations but I really don't see how they are useful in rehearsals, and I would love to hear about other people's experiences with this. Thanks.

Yes, really looking forward to reading this year's survey! I'm always interested in reading the results. Thanks for putting it together!

Hi and welcome! If you haven't already, check out the Students and Novices board- there are some great threads there pertaining to student stage managers.

Hope you guys are staying dry with all the Joaquin madness.

Well, we ended up moving the show indoors for the whole week, which has been...interesting. Going from the openness of the outdoor space, where all of the actors and instruments are miked to a very echoey room makes for a very different show. But I'm excited to see that the weather report is looking much better next week! Looking forward to being outside again.

Well, why the heck not, Matthew? :) It's pretty zany over here when we're doing both shows- we only overlap on Saturday mornings, but with all of the other programs going on at the gardens it gets kind of crazy.

Something that hasn't come up about this topic is that it's helpful for ASMs to know the blocking for understudy rehearsals. If you have a handful of understudies covering multiple parts, oftentimes it falls on the SM team to walk the other parts- if the ASMs don't have blocking written down, it can be a painful/unproductive rehearsal.

The outdoor show that I'm working on is a cute TYA musical in DC. It's a collaboration between the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Botanic Garden, performing at the garden. If you're in the area, feel free to drop by- the Gardens are free, the show is free, and it's right on the National Mall. If you haven't visited the gardens before, it's a great place to visit- there are outdoor gardens, and a conservatory full of "themed" rooms like the Tropics, Orchids, and the Desert.

You could also try using a china marker/grease pencil right on the table. They usually stay put in high heat situations (like you would use to label gels) but come off with soap and water.

Welcome aboard, Lynda! So interesting to have people from different backgrounds on the board. Your experiences working with magicians sound fascinating and I hope you share more of them!
