The Green Room / Re: Do you add a personal touch to your booth?
« on: Feb 27, 2011, 07:11 pm »
I have a silver Buddha charm taped on the wall (a very zen actress gave it to me). Right now I have some racy pinup-girl cards hanging around- a gift from my current (all-male) cast.

I'm good at my job,
but I've not mastered cloning.
Please come to rehearsal!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Fire Retardant Costumes
« on: Feb 10, 2011, 07:10 pm »
This seems like the last place you'd want to cut costs! Have you spoken with the people who will be fire-dancing/juggling? I imagine that if they are trained professionals (I'd be much more concerned if they were amateur!) they have special costumes for this, or at least some suggestion on how to make it safer.

One of my first jobs post-college, I was a SM intern (I'd never SMed a non-school show before). When an ASM left mid-season, they put me in his track. I was definitely not prepared, and had little experience. I struggled through my first two shows as everyone expected me to know what I should be doing. And during a particularly miserable tech, I had a producer pull me aside, tell me I was terrible at my job and would never succeed in this field.

The fact is, I DIDN'T know what I was doing. But someone saying that was a great motivator to go out and read and learn everything I could. It was harsh, and it made me angry, but sometimes that's the best motivation to shape up or ship out.

I had a similar experience on a show...an actress would consistently call last-minute and bail, and then she stopped coming entirely. She was dealing with health issues, so it was a tough situation. Ultimately, the director and I spoke with her and said it sounded like she had a lot of personal things that needed to take focus (much like your actress with her credits!) and we thought it was best for everyone if she left the production.

After that, we found someone to replace her for the run...our assistant director! She'd been in all the rehearsals and knew the blocking and choreography. She was also much more reliable. I'm sure if you look around, you'll be able to find someone who could step in, even temporarily until you can find a solid replacement.

The other day at my day job (receptionist at a salon) I told a woman "Alright, we're at 15" when her total was $15. Oops.

I think there's a typo in your subject line ;))

This is great, Matthew, thanks. I really need this right now!

A big ol Starbucks flavored latte the morning of a 10 out of 12, as opposed to "whatever halal cart is closest" coffee.

My school didn't have a stage management major...I came out with degrees in theater and in literary criticism (which has proved very helpful in close-reading scripts). I didn't even know what a stage manager was until I got to college! I stage managed a couple of shows, and ran crew for a few, but mostly took as many technical classes as I could (including our one management course). I worked in the scene shop as well. Ultimately, I shadowed on a couple shows, and then worked with a director who knew I was eager to learn and was thankfully patient enough to help me refine what I knew.

My point is, learn what you can, and get the experience you can. Take advantage of everything around you. A piece of paper saying so does not a stage manager make.

The Green Room / Re: First Jobs

I was the box office manager in a summer stock theater. The SM for the season had to take off early, and the artistic director found me, said "you've stage managed, right? you like it?" and handed me the script to Amadeus. Been doing it ever since.

The Green Room / Re: This one goes to Eleven!

January 2000....I was a sophomore at my all-girls, verrrrry Catholic high school. Organizing a student production of scenes from plays that weren't allowed in our drama class due to content, language, or men. (I remember Agnes of God and Art being part of the evening.) :) Always a little subversive...

I've been fortunate to be able to get around and to/from work in the weather, and have had all my actors arrive (relatively) on time.

We did have to move the weekly rugby workouts indoors- didn't seem fair to make them run around in the cold and wind and snow.

The Green Room / Re: Dracula in NYC

It sounds to me like someone rushed into a Dracula revival because of the vampire trend and thought that was enough to sell the show.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: SHOWS: Ragtime! Advice

The recent revival was very basic- all framework. Coalhouse's car, for example, was just the frame with seats and wheels. The piano was the same way. Don't know if that makes it any easier, but I imagine the frame of a car is simpler to work with than a full vintage car!
