This just in from our Original Anonymous Poster...

I did the reading last week and it went wonderfully.  As MatthewShiner mentioned, it did not actually need an AEA Stage Manager, they company was just more comfortable having one since most of the cast was AEA.  The company took care of the prep work, my contract spelled out three days of work with me receiving a travel stipend for each day, the same as the rest of the cast.  I had a great time and will look to do more staged readings in the future, hopefully with enough planning that I can do the prep myself.

A question on perspective:
Is anyone who responded positively to tats over 35?

Exactly what Maribeth said.
I call all the cues on my shows.
One Ship; One Captain.

Yes, the Spot Ops have cue sheets. If the LD or their Asst don't generate the Cue List, I do.
I establish a default color, frost and size. If that deviates in a certain cue, I remind them.
I know it sounds like I'm talking all the time, I usually am, but this way a new operator/sub can step in at any moment and do the show as they are hearing directions as well as referring to the sheet.

This from an anonymous member...

A theater I frequently work with emailed recently saying they have a stage reading coming up and the staff person who was going to SM has backed out, and would I please fill in for the three days of the rehearsals and the actual reading for x dollars.  I've never done a stage reading before, but it is with a director I like and a playwright I've worked with before, so I said yes to get the experience and to help out (warning sign right there, right?).

I read the Stage Reading Contract and noticed that what they have set aside to pay me is less than the min weekly rate listed on the contract.  They're taking care of the prep work, I'm just showing up for the rehearsals and running the actual reading.  Given that, I'm not sure how they plan to contract me, they can't very well have me sign a contract saying their paying me less than the minimum, but I imagine that they also can't just cut me a check and do the reading without a stage manager's name attached.

Thoughts?  The more I think about the sketchier it feels.  Has anyone else been in a situation like this before, any recommendations, or is there something I'm missing since I'm unfamiliar with staged readings?

Thanks.

Absolutely agree with the advantages of this tool but BLUE MAN GROUP is non-union and answers to a different drummer...

Anybody have I LOVE A PIANO?
If so, please email pm me.

Excellent question. I would assume that since pension payments are made on most every contract, if a non-member qualified for pension, they would be able to draw it. But even as I write this, I doubt my logic. As always, call your Rep.

I absolutely, completely, 100% agree that "live capture" is an essential tool and should be more readily available. For all the reasons stated and any more we can think of. BUT - these new changes happen slowly and contract by contract. DO NOT ever assume if one theatre can do it, another has the right to as well. ALWAYS check with your AEA Rep for the rules pertaining to the show you are working on. We have been successful so far in relaxing the Media Rules in several contracts but THESE REQUIRE ADDITIONAL FEES from the Producer. LOA's to any contract are individually negotiated and no two are the alike. Each theatre has it's own set of concessions, limitations and perks. The wheels of Equity move slowly but we are really gaining momentum on this issue. NEVER GIVE UP. Keep talking to your Business Reps and let them know how important live capture is to you. We can make a difference. I have been doing just that for almost 30 years. Ouch...

It is possible to use the AEA contract and not join. Should you acquire 12 or 20 weeks of health contributions and therefore qualify for either 6mos or one year of insurance, you receive that benefit. You do not have to be a member to qualify for insurance; you just have to meet the qualifications.

This appears to be an expansion to the Media Rules within the LORT Contract.
CAUTION: I don't believe that every theatre working with an LOA to the LORT contract can use these rules.
Matthew, please confirm you are quoting a new Media package that is for LORT only and not for LOA's to the contract.

But heck yes! what a tool!!!
