Introductions / Re: Wait, you're my SM?

Welcome to the boards!

In fact when I speak regularly at the SM seminar at a major university that puts out lots of BFA SMs and MFA PMs and SMs, their professor always reminds me to talk about how to eliminate any excess of "please" and thank you" from the report. Not to be impolite, but to infer equality in standing and a sense of "team."

It's certainly a matter of personal style, but I think an excess of "please" and "thank you" can make it seem like others are doing you a favor by responding or remedying issues. I do thank folks for fixes made, if it needs acknowledgement, and include a blanket "Thank you" in the signature of my notes. I have thought about this a bit before, actually not in reference to saying "thank you" but more in reference to saying "please"- if you have 10 props notes, do you say "please" in each one? It seems excessive....

Tools of the Trade / Re: Casting Form
« on: Dec 20, 2015, 12:43 pm »
I can tell you how to do this is Open Office...I'm guessing it's very similar in Excel. You can use conditional formatting.

Highlight the cells you want to apply this to. Go to the Format menu on the top bar and select "Conditional Formatting."

Make the condition "Formula is" and fill in the field with "COUNTIF(A$1:A$11;A1)>1". Then, before you close the window, select the style you want the cell to be if there's a repeat- highlighted red, a box around the cell, a big X through the cell, etc. Then click "Okay".

Thanks for the great recommendations, folks! I just bought some new luggage and used this thread for reference. Very excited about my new packing cubes as well!

Welcome aboard, Lydia! It sounds like you're getting a lot of good experience in during your last year. What is your major? I'm always curious about how people use the skillsets that they have from other majors/experiences in stage management- it makes for some of the most interesting SMs.

Hi and welcome, David! I think that a lot of us would be interested in hearing about SMing in Portugal- I hope you share some of your experiences on the boards.

The Hardline / Re: 10 out of 12s Meal Break Question
« on: Nov 23, 2015, 10:10 am »
I have worked (and am currently working) at a theatre that uses a variation on this schedule - the reason being that if you do a 10 out of 12 with a 2 hour break in the middle of the day, it's difficult to match up the hours with an IATSE crew schedule. If the crew is on two five-hour calls, it wouldn't allow for any setup or cleanup time, and no time to work on the break.

I was surprised the first time too, because I had never heard of it before.

I love working on musicals too- shows with a lot going on always keep things interesting. :)

Hi and welcome, Lucy! What has been your favorite production to work on so far?

Make sure the blocking book is completely up to date, representing what actually happens onstage, not what happened back in rehearsal.

I especially like this one- so much changes during tech and once the show is running, it can be difficult for the SM to update the blocking in their book.

Introductions / Re: New to the board and Stage Managing

Great that you and the director already have a good working relationship. I'm sure it will help that you can read music! If you're interested, over on the Plays and Musicals board, all of the topics have a tag at the beginning. If you "sort by" subject and skip to page 13, there are a whole bunch of threads about SMing musicals. Hope that helps!

Welcome aboard, Bil! It's always great to have people on the board with different background and experiences. It's great that you've found that stage management suits you.

Have you worked on musicals before, or will Spelling Bee be your first?
