I get mine from moo.com - a little extra than some other places, but the versatility is so worth it!

The Green Room / Re: What Kind of SM are you?
« on: Aug 08, 2011, 11:49 am »
I once had a parent who was a spot op for the first time with me see me in the audience prior to a show and come down out of the spot tower to tell me personally that she had no idea how good I was until she worked with a different SM and that she hoped I'd be doing her next show.

If that ever happens to me, my career will be complete! :)

We are told (by the British Red Cross) that we can give aspirin for a heart attack, but that's it. In reality, most people will not give something out if asked, but they will leave it on the side and turn their back for a minute or two.

The Green Room / Re: "I can't do that on stage."
« on: Jul 03, 2011, 01:54 pm »
Old topic, but I thought I'd share....

A show about four months ago, we had an actor who had to blow out some candles. Pretty simple, right? Apparently not. He blew wax INTO HIS EYE. We still have absolutely no idea how it happened, even after trying to recreate it ourselves (wearing goggles).

So, to prevent this happening again, we gave him a candlesnuff. What did he do this time? Put the handle next to the candles, and burnt himself when he picked it up.

You can add paint into the latex before you put it on - colourmatching skin would be difficult, because of all the different tones, unless she can add foundation around it to blend in. We have something called Covent Garden primer over here, which you can add to paint to stop it cracking - this should work with painted latex as well, if you need it!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Multiplay Sound Cue Software
« on: Jun 06, 2011, 07:14 pm »
I always found Multiplay very un-intuitive and hard to use. I haven't used it in a couple of years, so my thoughts may be completely null and void by now. The GO hotkeys didn't always set themselves correctly, I always had problems from MIDI control (even though I wasn't using MIDI) and it crashed quite a bit. As I say though, this may have all been fixed!

In case sugar glass is safe enough (I've never had someone walk over it - the director always left an area to throw it free), maximillionx has put a make-your-own sugar glass recipe here.....http://smnetwork.org/forum/index.php/topic,4033.msg24553.html#msg24553

.I know there are a couple apps that can be used to write directly on a document with a stylus....

Interesting....do you happen to know the app name? And where to get a stylus that works?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Your Cue Light System
« on: Apr 22, 2011, 06:22 pm »
Our at Uni is a standard 18-channel cue light system incorporated into our prompt desk......Any one of these 18 lights can be routed to pretty much any part of the theatre or auditorium via Audio Visual Boxes (AVB's), which contain, among other things, a cue light socket. For example, there are two of these boxes in the pit, two in the LX box, one either side of stage, four on the FOH bridges.........the list goes on.

I think it was chosen simply for being so versatile, and the industry 'standard' over here........and I don't know of any issues or limitations encountered so far.

The Good -
  • A Standby button flashes red until it is acknowledged at the other end
  • Physical buttons - rather than a screen
  • Lights can be grouped on the fly by selecting the yellow buttons under each cue light
  • An integral part of the desk
The Bad
  • Ummmm.....

My issue w stagejobspro is that you can't attach or upload a resume; rather, you have to type in show by show.

Yes you can.....I'm not sure if it's the same method for you, but in the UK, once logging in, you click 'My Profile'>'Files' and then scroll down...

Have a look at ShowTool SM - it's very useful for tracking props

It probably wouldn't be hugely reliable, or secure. If the SM needs to wander, that would cause issues as well. Some places I've been (particularly educational places) - nowhere I've worked though - have used things like BBM, Whatsapp, Facebook chat or MSN for basic communication.
