I've always heard "house is open" for audience going in. Maybe add "Don't go onstage!" if you feel the actors are dense?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: 2 Shows in Repertoire
« on: May 01, 2011, 03:41 pm »
Everything BayAreaSM said. I just finished doing two shows in rep...we had "changeover boxes" for each show that held props, set additions, and everything else that wasn't shared. End of each night, everything for show 1 was put into the changeover box and stored, and the changeover box for show 2 was brought up.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Fight certification

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I've done quite a few shows with fights, and always sat in with the fight choreographer and been fight captain. Think I'm going to look into taking some classes as opposed to getting certified in it. (Also, I sorta like to fight. :))

Tools of the Trade / Fight certification

(I wasn't totally sure if this was the right board, so I apologize if this should go somewhere else.)

Are any of you fight certified? If so, where'd you go? Recommendations?

I've done so many shows with elaborate fight sequences lately, so it seems like a good idea (and a great extra skill to have).

Employment / Re: To Break or Not to Break

The only time I've done this, it was to leave an off-off-Bway production to do an off-Bway. I gave a week's notice, which gave me time to get my paperwork in order and hand it off to another SM. We had just started rehearsal, so fortunately it was easy for me to hand the show over (just a lot of preproduction paperwork!)

The only cues I'd mark in my book would be necessary/practical cues (a phone ring, for example, or a lamp turned on or off). Even then, a note would go in the rehearsal report to confirm these cues with the designers, just to be sure we're all on the same page.

PROPS: Will need a large dildo for the dream sequence. [Actress]'s "friend" has one to lend us. (Unused, no worries.)

I've seen them in photography supply places. Basically, they make very thick smoke for a few mins so that it photographs easily. You should be able to find it online if nowhere else.

Wow! I wonder if you could use the same rigging (hidden cup on his head) and use smoke drops? I've never used them onstage, just for photography, but they look great.

I recently stumbled upon Performing Arts Peacock- a meme.

Common thoughts of a theater denizen, voiced by a peacock (of course).

A few favorites:

Tools of the Trade / Re: Favorite Bag
« on: Mar 04, 2011, 12:26 pm »
My favorite bag predates truly portable laptops.  It actually predates portable cell phones.  It's a grey LL Bean messenger bag that I purchased in 1988.  I've named it Fred.

It's been my main bag through middle school, high school, college, my entire SM career in a rough weather town... 6 years of real estate... and I still carry it any day that I need something larger than a purse.  23 years on, the waterproofing is kinda gone and the shoulder guard broke off years ago, but the bag itself is still in excellent condition.  LL Bean offers lifetime repairs on their gear so I could probably get it restored to original condition if I really wanted to.  I've considered it, but I don't think I could be parted from Fred for that long.

Kay, this makes me really happy about my bag choice! Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Employment / Re: Pictures
« on: Mar 01, 2011, 07:55 pm »
I was asked to get a headshot for a show I ran about a year ago, so I had a photographer-friend take one. (See my userpic.) I also have one that I have used for networking/job sites/etc...it's an outtake from a publicity shoot for another show that shows me sitting behind a desk with my script and smiling. (Yes, a candid rehearsal shot where I was happy!) I like it because it doesn't look like an actor headshot but is still a clear picture of me in my element.
